Animation Damnation - The Super Mario Brothers Super Show

On the maiden voyage of Animation Damnation on the WHM Patreon, the guys are talking about one of the several ridiculous episodes of The Super Mario Brothers Super Show! In this particular episode, "Flatbush Koopa," King Koopa invades Brooklyn and changes a bunch of signs, destroys the Coney Island Cyclone, and turns one offensively-drawn cab driver into a pile of bricks! And in the live action portion of this terrible program, Mario and Luigi deal with a noisy, opera-singing neighbor, fix a toilet, and possibly shoot up heroin while watching a snuff film!

Growing up in LA this show would have something called Koopa’s Klubhouse (or something like that) on fridays where it was some guy in a lousy Koopa costume (kostume?) showing old cartoons to an audience of kids they’d get from local YMCA/boys & girls clubs around Santa Monica and west LA. So there was another theme song for that. Also they’d have a Legend Of Zelda segment on fridays as well

I can't believe they kept the whole Koopa canon that Bowser is turning people into bricks. https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/131863/is-mario-killing-people-when-he-smashes-bricks I also can't believe I'm commenting on a 6 year old episode.

what does this even mean

The best part was Friday was The Legend of Zelda time,! Lol I was obsessed with Zelda

Oswald Bates

Is this episode listed twice on the homepage? It has Mario twice but both point here

I'm in the UK and remember the live action...

Tony Garvey

Well, I looked Birdo up on Deviantart. Damn my curiosity!

Brian Moore

Yes!

Meanwhile, some of us are waiting for the inevitable Heavy Metal episode...

Let's go true blue with a Ninja Scroll viewing.

David Valdivia

The bluer, the better. Great show.

Julio Scissors

I love the live action bits. I think the whole show should have been the live action stuff.

John Nelson

When this aired in the UK they just showed the cartoon parts, discovering the live action bits existed was not a fun day...

Flabyo

"The internet is TERRIBLE!!!" Great show. I hope the DIC GI Joe cartoon where Cobra takes over a Kindergarten gets talked about. What a flaming train wreck.

John Nelson

Andrew's "Oh noooo" of despair is a delight.

And, now, while we have an expert on hand, did the Cadillac Cats ever wander into Cadillacs and Dinosaurs?

Clifton Jewett

Heathcliff was one cartoon who sometimes hung out with The Cadalac Cats and then The Cadalac Cats had their own cartoon with their own orange cat that wasn't Heathcliff. Heathcliff was the epitome of a cartoon you watched when school was over, only cause it was more fun then school.

John Nelson

I really liked this show as a kid. Rewatching this reminds me to make sure I get my mum something nice for Xmas for putting up with this cartoon.

Dustin Faber

When I was a kid this would come on through out the week but then on Fridays it would be replaced with the Zelda cartoon which was way inferior in my opinion.

Chris M.

I didn't know this show existed before this animation damnation, but I watched it before listening and was super embarrassed doing so.

it was probably on WWOR which, like TBS and WGN got nationally syndicated in early cable channels. I recall Mario Cantone's face on this show as well.

Pixel Pusher

Steam pipe alley! It was on a new York station that for some reason was a channel on cable I used to watch it in Tampa FL as a kid.

Francisco del toro rios

Pretty sure I've watched a snuff film with Lou Albano once.

joedonbaker

Did they use the cab driver bricks to build a pizza oven do you think?

Adam Martin

Ooh this should be good—the Sonic episode is one of my favorite AD's.

Clifton Jewett

I loved the show too when I was a kid - but oh my god was it a painful experience to revisit it. But the AD ep was incredible as always!

Heath Chamerski

I remember loving this show as a kid. Where was the FCC when we needed them? Why were we allowed to be exposed to this?

David Conrad

Watching this episode was painful, the animation is worse than you can possibly imagine.
