2025-11-08 19:35:18 +0000 UTCHiya Amber, killer choice for your first ToN tune. Peter Steele (born, Petrus Thomas Ratajczyk) was an incredible person. We lost him in 14 April 2010 (4 days after I lost my Mom). He was only 44. He started out working for the New York Department of Sanitation while bouncing around the NYCHX (New York City Hardcore) scene in the 80s. He was also in a band called Carnivore that formed in 1982 after another band he founded, Fallout, disbanded. Carnivore also had Joey Z of Life of Agony (another New York band that you'll love; River Runs Red is a timeless classic). After Carnivore split in '89, soon after Type O' Negative was created (his first drummer, Sal Albruscato (Named my husky after him) moved on to LOA and Dan Richardson, LOA's drummer, stood in while Peter found a replacement. That man turned out to be Johnny Kelly. I can't tell you how many ticket stubs to shows and festivals I've seen Type O' Negative at during my time in the Army. I spent 9 of my 12 years in Germany and went to every headbanger festival you could get a ticket for. Fun fact about me: Joey Z of LOA produced my band's records at his Method of Groove Studio in the Brooklyn warehouse district until Hurricane Sandy destroyed it. As a fan, I asked Joey a lot of questions about Type O'.) The production on this track is absolutely amazing! With the fades in the right places, the dual tracking of vocals, Kenny Hickey, Type O Negative's guitarist, is one of the most underrated vox in the business. Peter would write parts in the arrangement just for him to be highlighted. He has the chops too. Onstage, dude was a great performer! The beauty that ToN has made their music out of—that dark, gothic, heavy metal with a hardcore/alt-metal is pure genius I remember seeing ToN and LOA (Life of Agony) at the clubs in Germany running together. Road dogs! They're all out of Brooklyn. Both bands would sell out L'Amour on Staten Island, and they were in A-List Rotation on Seton Hall Radio. Gah! This band brings back so many great memories. Oh, and one more thing. It's a pretty hilariously little-known fact about Type O' Negative's Peter Steele....he um....posed for Playgirl Magazine. How do I know this? When your heavy metal wife puts it on her Christmas list, you oblige. (God rest her.) I saw someone mentioned the band H.I.M. (His Infernal Majesty). Oh, ho yeah. You're gonna fall in love with Ville Valo's voice. Us singers call this dude a vocal inspiration. Just like we did with Peter's and LOA's Keith Caputo. H.I.M. has some bangers as well: (Big shout out to their covers of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" and Blue Öyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper". The videos are sweet and the jams, well, are fuggin killer! Gotta do some digging for DFTR, but they're out there) They call their style "Love Metal" with the heartagram as their logo. Amber, we were touch and go there for a bit, even made those goodbye calls, but thank God for my cardiologist and his team's hands at getting this Ole Warhorse's ticker back in running order.
