Living Colour, An Important Reminder About The Cult Of Personality

I got this album when it was first released and it blew me away!!! They still tour. Cory Glover had a "walk through" scene in the movie Platoon. Vernon Reids pedal board is something else. Great song from a great band!!!

Nice first listen and commentary! It was so well said. I really think you’d enjoy some other songs by Living Colour, Amy. “Open Letter (To a Landlord)” from the same album is a good representation of them infusing even more Funk and R&B into their sound. I also think you might enjoy the song “Type” from their second album, Time’s Up.

I hear some RUSH in there. Also, for Black History Month, maybe some CHUCK BERRY, LITTLE RICHARD, BO DIDDLEY!!!

Living Colour were part of a movement set off by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, of bands mixing rock and funk. The Red Hot Chili Peppers mixed rock and funk, but most of the bands that were inspired by them mixed heavy metal and rap. I never liked the metal sound, but I saw Living Colour perform on Saturday Night Live and was excited by the performance. Both the political message and the energetic stage performance enticed me. I got the album and liked some of it. I tried to like it, but really, their funky stuff wasn't that funky. It was a bit stiff. I saw them live and had a good time, but they were even less funky live, and they had a tendency to overplay, making the sound a bit garbled. Their albums that followed their first one, were less appealing to me. They began to focus more on the heavy rock and ignore their funky side, and then they dissolved pretty quickly.

First time I heard this song I thought it was Stevie Ray Vaughan, not because of the guitar, but because of the voice.

Might I suggest "Maggot Brain" for Black History Month?

Really enjoyed that Amy, In my opinion, Vernon Reid is one of the most underrated guitar players of all time. The man's got chops! Since you brought it up, for Black History month maybe we should do some Lenny Kravitz.

David Taylor

Very competent late 80s rock band. Better than most at that time, but a bad time for rock IMHO. But they are definitely notable for being African-American in a genre that is pretty much a bunch of white guys. Only black 80s metal band I can think of.

Steve

A very apt message as most everyone in politics on the national stage could be considered as such, and a nice review, Thanks.

Enjoyed that

It is what one would expect and musically it does not touch me in any way. My senses are in overdrive. It is interchangeable with any heavy band. However, I did like the ending.
