Fall Out Boy, Centuries - Amy’s First Listen And Analysis

Does it feel modern? Yes! Does it sound a bit commercial? Yes! Is it relying on heavily used, even overused musical stereotypes? Yes! BUT! It’s really great and they do all of this to achieve a wonderful final outcome!

I concur with your mention of De La Soul (and A Tribe Called Quest... a "native tongues" band too); Beastie Boys; and, especially, BECK... although I hope she does LOSER and NOBODY'S FAULT BUT MY OWN first among his songs.

“Tom’s Diner” by Suzanne Vega is such a catchy song and the lyrics create a word picture that is so evocative.

Building on Tony's comment, here's a few albums I'd recommend picking a song or two from if you want to delve into the world of sampling: 3 Feet High and Rising by De La Soul Madvillainy by Madvillain Donuts by J Dilla Endtroducing by DJ Shadow Paul's Boutique by the Beastie Boys Odelay by Beck (Beck is a rock musician by trade, so I hope you'll get to something of his eventually)

Robert Allen

Not to get too pedantic, but the use of the ending refrain from Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner" isn't a sample, but an interpolation. Fall Out Boy performs the vocals themselves, instead of using an audio recording of Vega. (They did so with Vega's permission.) Given that "Tom's Diner" is the song that was literally responsible for the MP3 file format, I'm kind of surprised Amy wasn't given a chance to hear that first, due to its historical significance as well as the incorporation of its ending refrain into "Centuries."

I love these backhanded compliments lol

I always interpreted this as being told from the viewpoint of a school shooter. “I am a loser but I am going to be infamous.” But of course it always gets used as a sports hype up song. It is a bit too polished-sounding for me.

Shockingly, the more this song played the more I liked it. I especially liked the chorus and was surprised. But it is good. I like it!!!!!!

Enjoyed that. The opening tune, “Tom’s Diner” is referred as sampling. Rap and post 2000 bands of various genres, samples a lot. Which is another reason why Rap gets a bad rap. I would still be interested if you explore Rap. I’m sure that it’s full of lovely surprises to explore., I like some, to a degree. If you do go down that road. Eminem. You should look into the subject of sample. Copyright, recording, $ royalties A few years back a cover of Tom’s Diner on TikTok went viral. I’ll drop a video in A place to hang out.
