Tool, Ænema- Amy’s First Listen And Analysis

A great expression of fear of the future and frustration at the lack of change.

Tool, Ænema- Amy’s First Listen And Analysis

Wow I really expected people to say that it was insensitive and inappropriate to do this song at this time given what's going on in LA

Ah yes, I plan on buying beachfront property at the Bay of Arizona real soon, now.

The learn to swim line is reference to the San Andres fault breaking off and southern California sinking into the sea, making Arizona ocean front property and naming it Arizona bay.

This is Maynard showing his disgust at the overall vibe of Los Angeles and the type of people it attracts. Probably why he lives in the Arizona desert.

Forty-six and two for sure. This was waaaaaay too intense for me at my advanced age. 🙄

And this is exactly why I can only consume Tool in small doses. I respect the hell out of these group of musicians and think they are among the very top prog metal bands. But because of the intensity, I have to consume them in small doses......one song at a time rather than an entire album. Kudos for taking this one on!

Thank you!

Amy and Vlad ..a suggestion for a possible analysis (or at least a Minutes After video) is Danny Carey's incredible performance of Pneuma, filmed on drum cam. It's a more recent song, but not such a great Tool song that it's worthy of analysis as a song itself. But Danny's performance is jaw-dropping. https://youtu.be/FssULNGSZIA?si=ZMI2G7eCyN6QZj9U

This is my favorite TOOL album, but not my favorite song from it. Still, it was an interesting analysis. EULOGY and FORTY SIX & 2 are my favorites... AND I like that TOOL included the comedy of Bill Hicks: Bill Hicks, a late comedian, is sampled in the song "Third Eye" from Tool's album Ænima. The album also includes lyrical references to Hicks' set "Arizona Bay". The song "Third Eye" samples Bill Hicks' voice. The album's title Ænima is a combination of the words "anima" and "enema". "Anima" refers to life force or the feminine side of man, while "enema" refers to the spiritual and physical. The album's goal was to help people open their third eye and find comfort in the dark. The album's title may also be a reference to Hicks' claims that psilocybin mushrooms could be used to "squeegee [one's] third eye clean".

I like their album Undertow. This song makes me think of Somewhat Damaged by NIN. It is not a happy go lucky song. And you would not enjoy it. But frustration and anger are parts of life music can explore IMO.

Marc Gendron

Enjoyed that.

Love this song and your analysis. It's an incredibly powerful and well-executed piece of music. Some dismiss the lyrics as misanthropic, but as Maynard himself says near the end of the song, "try and read between the lines". He doesn't really want millions of people to die, he wants us to see the problem. The problem is us: our hubris, our pre-occupation with ourselves and the insignificant details of life to the exclusion of the things that really matter. The lyrics mean more today than they did 25 years ago. Musically, it's perfect. The song lives, breathes and pulses as if it is nature itself, its own warning sign of what is to come if we don't make significant changes.

It does nothing for me. It competes with itself. This is not why I listen to music. I understand they are allowed express themselves but I am not lured in or sympathetic. So this is not for me.
