Amazingly Christina Aguilera can outdo Mariah in the melisma department.

100%. Nilsson's voice is shot through with emotion and devastation and is concentrated on the sentiment of the song itself. Mariah is concentrating on her own abilities. Mariah has one of the most technically amazing voices I've ever heard, but I can't help but feel that everything she sings is in service of her instrument, not the song.

for me the difference in the versions is When Nilsson sings it: she just walked out the door. When Mariah sings it it's like Watch me sing this song About Something that I heard from second-hand.

I share the same opinion and not just about this song.

Great analysis as always. Another song that might be fun to do a comparison of is Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood by Nina Simone vs by The Animals. I also think Amy would enjoy some other songs by Nina Simone where she showcases her brilliant pianoplaying and easily slides in some Bach style in her jazzplaying such as Love Me or Leave Me (the version from the album Let It All Out) or Mood Indigo (from her first album Little Girl Blue).

I always feel Mariah Carey uses the song to show off her voice, rather than using her voice to show the power of the song.

"I prefer Harry Nilsson." That's the right answer. Also, I just want to say that I appreciate your releasing these videos in the morning. Now, instead of starting the day by immediately reading the news and losing the will to live, I can start with something positive that celebrates human creativity. It makes a difference.

Amy, thank you, there's so much to learn from your comparisons and contrasts between artists!

Enjoyed that. Mariah is fantastic. On the subject of covering songs. She also samples songs. (A subject I haven’t heard on this channel) sampling is using another song within a song. Mariah samples Tom Tom Clubs GENIUS OF LOVE in her song FANTASY Modern hip-hop and rap samples a lot of songs. You should do a sample topic. I suggest starting with Mariah Fantasy. Because it would be the most fun. First you got to know who the Tom Tom Club is and Tina Weymouth. Oh, that bass line , and the giddy up in Stop Making Sense which put Tina in the greatest bassist category. Sampling
