Sheryl Crow, If It Make You Happy - Amy’s First Listen And Analysis

A simple song that captures the emotions and life experience incredibly well. In fact, by the end I couldn’t help but think of Cohen’s Suzanne.

Glad you got to Sheryl Crow, Amy! I highly recommend All I Wanna Do as your next song of hers. It's a very atmospheric song that tells a simple story extremely well.

I was wrong... she's not playing guitar on this!

It was Jeff Trott playing guitar although Waddy Watchell played it live

If you want to hear a fun song from Sheryl Crow, listen to "All I Wanna Do". "First" Guitar = Lead Guitar. I think it's probably Sheryl playing rhythm guitar, and that's probably why it's so prominent. I think you nailed it with the "talking to herself" insight!

Glad you pointed that out. She could be Amy’s neighbor and seems like an accessible person for an artist of that stature. I’d recommend Leaving Las Vegas if another bite at the apple is going to be taken.

Always loved this rhythm guitar . Always fun to play something similar on the guitar. Sound and rhythm and tone just work great together. Not full distorted guitar. Just a bit of overdrive.

Must listen: Redemption Day

"IT'S said that when a Roman General returned in glory to ancient Rome, he was accompanied in his procession through the streets by a slave whose job it was to remind him that his triumph would not last forever." A very very hard lesson to learn and understand.

I’ve always kind of liked Sheryl Crow. In a way I think of her as the female Tom Petty. Obviously not as deep of a catalog, but similar in that her songs are never unnecessarily complex, but different from each other, but you can always tell it’s her.

Maybe this song exemplifies her life, as Swift would say in 'The Tortured Poets Department' as she has had many love relationships including Eric Clapton and the now infamous Lance Armstrong but seems to always end them.

Enjoyed that, Sheryl is a resident of Nashville. She is kinda, like a local icon. One of the great artists that transplanted to the area. She keeps a low profile. She been living there for awhile. She has participated in school and community events over the pass couple decades and those awards never went to her head.

Really enjoyed your analysis. The chords are very Stones-y. Excellent job picking up on the idea the song is about herself. Sheryl has gone through a multitude of explanations since its release. "A friend who committed suicide" (ex-boyfriend Kevin Gilbert?), sexist men, the recording industry...until finally admitting in a later interview it was really autobiographical, and about her dealing with her own fame and success.

I really enjoyed this song. I like her voice and can't wait till you hear more of her.
