Blur, Song 2 - Amy’s First Listen And Analysis

A great expression of the carefree, non serious, even silly stage of youth.

Blur, Song 2 - Amy’s First Listen And Analysis

Comments

Yes. One of my favourites. Especially the French version.

and To The End!

Ricardo Roth

She would like The Universal and To The End!

Ricardo Roth

I think after Plastic Beach, the characters or should I say as the band members age, (and they do), each has their own direction. the band is always in turmoil Honestly, I need help to get through the story line. I still like the music and artwork The first three, was the new stuff. And my favorite also

TONY SURRATT

The Universal is a great contrast to Song 2.

Vitor Zimmerer

Gorillaz lost me slightly after their first three albums, of which the second and third were particularly brilliant.

Vitor Zimmerer

This is their "American" album, full of American indie references, Pavement in particular. Guitarist Graham Coxon listened to Pavement and he felt he needed to unlearn what he had learnt.

Vitor Zimmerer

It's one of their most popular songs, but there are better songs with which to introduce one's self to Blur. The Universal, Tender, Beetlebum, The Narcissist, etc.

Helen Mazarakis

Sounds to me like a jovial parody of morose grunge, with the same subdued verse / pounding chorus dynamic, and in particular of Smells like teen spirit. Oasis' answer to Nirvana was "Live forever" (According to Noel Gallagher, he wrote it after hearing Nirvana released a song called "I hate myself and I want to die"). Both bands were considered as the top 2 Britpop bands. It was how we got a small taste of the Beatles in the '90s. This song reminds me somewhat of Helter skelter.

Rea Lavi

Okay now you’ve finally completed the Blur versus Oasis Brit pop rivalry! (Brit pop was heavily influenced by the Beatles so it would be interesting to explore it a little more as well) Also personally I’m a Gorillaz girl I do like Gorillaz more and I’d love to see them on the channel one day

Song 2 received its name not just because it was the 2nd song on the album but also because it is 2 minutes and 2 seconds long. The band regarded it as a bit of a joke but it turned out to be one of their biggest hits. As others have said they have more complex songs in their repertoire.

Graeme Frew

Wonderful. Love this review. Blur is a really great band with so many fantastic songs. Far better than this one . Ones I think Amy works really like ! Like The Universal , Boys And Girls , Coffee and TV …. Really hope you get to hear and review more of them .

Siôn Hewitt

I really like Gorillaz, but I don't hear much of what I like about them in Blur. Maybe I need to listen to a wider sampling. As an animator, Gorillaz videos hold a special place in my heart in a way that more than just a pure listening experience would achieve. AND the music is great on its own.

That made my day

Amy, I think you nailed it. It's heavy, yet light, funny, but has this dark shadow. I like it. It would be interesting to have you listen to some other Blur songs. Blur can be much more complex and have a very wide range of styles. Song 2 is a nice way to lift your spirits and a great fit in the overall album experience. This is not widely considered a narcotics song (like "Beetlebum" is), but I personally am very sure this song is a depiction of the rush when taking drugs. Singer Damon Albarn had a heroin addiction at the time. Recommendations: For Tomorrow, Girls & Boys, Beetlebum, No Distance Left to Run, Out of Time, The Ballad. And then there are all the other projects involving Damon Albarn: Gorillaz. The Good, the Bad, and the Queen. The solo albums. He is celebrated for a good reason.

Vitor Zimmerer

Are you my twin brother?

TangoEliott

Tango, I have recently admitted to myself that I'm perfectly happy listening, and finding deep cuts and other things to like, amongst the rows and rows of albums I have received so much pleasure from, for more than 60 years. I have no interest in actively seeking out new music.

George Brady

Blur reinvented their sound several times, and by the time this song came out they had lost me (though I don't dislike it). The Blur that I fell in love with, and keep coming back to today, is the one that released the early albums "Modern Life is Rubbish" and "Parklife" -- witty and observant slices of British life in the vein of the Beatles, the Kinks, and the Jam. A '60s mod-pop sound brought up to date. Some favorites: "Chemical World", "Pressure On Julian", "Tracy Jacks", "Parklife", "The Story of a Charmless Man".

Ye_Humble_Scrivener

Only if Amy reviews them. I do not have enough years left to listen to all the people on my list

TangoEliott

You got this exactly right, Amy, thanks for breaking it down. We used to call it "the woo hoo song" when we didn't know exactly who or what it was. It's not serious, you're right, but it's perfect for amateur guitarists (like me) who couldn't really play, but enjoyed playing loud power chords with friends. And the "kid" part? Well, I was in my 40's when it came out, but that didn't stop me, playing loud and feeling good about it.

George Brady

They do have much more complex music in their repertoire, and are well worth listening to again. For the record, I was 15 several decades ago but still love the here-and-gone burst of energy that is Song 2.

Gavin Regnart

Ooh, Amy... a review of "Needles and Pins" is suddenly what I really wanted, once you said those words! Multiple covers exist, but The Searchers have what many people regard as "the original".

George Brady

I'd encourage you to listen to some of their other work, there's a lot of variety. Some of my favourites include To The End, Coffee & TV, and Tender. Their best known songs are Girls and Boys, Country House, and Parklife, all of which have their charms too.

Gavin Regnart

Enjoyed that. Blur spun off into Gorillaz in 1998. A virtual rock band of cartoon members, with a complete adolescence backstory. The artwork is genius. It like a photo album of teenage musicians. I hope you review Gorillaz. They’re worthy of a complete series, IMHO. Start with Clint Eastwood then Feel Good Inc. check out the artwork on the cover of their albums, then if you want check out their videos, still got to start with Clint Eastwood. Gorillaz is like a grown up version of a barrel of monkeys (put to music) They are a fantastic musical experience.

TONY SURRATT

Not something I would listen to again. Not my type of song. I always feel badly when I say that. However, I have to say I did really enjoy the intro instruments.
