Chapter 1592 - The Singing Won’t Stop
Added 2025-04-28 05:46:16 +0000 UTCTheresant wasn’t sure what was happening. Brood Tenders ran everywhere outside the snailcare centre, checking readouts, consulting with experts. Musical experts were rushed in to listen and analyse, but none had any answers.
The snails wouldn’t stop singing.
Young as they were, as little as two months, the hatchlings were still weak, still growing quickly. These weren’t monsters, ready to fight for survival the moment they were born, and the Tenders were terrified of the cost this continuous exertion would have on the snails if they didn’t stop.
“Are there any of their regular foods we haven’t offered them?” Theresant demanded.
“We’ve tried all of them,” a Brood Tender replied. “They haven’t shown interest in eating at all!”
Not eating! This was the worst possible sign.
“Leave the foot out there and observe closely,” Theresant ordered. “They’ll surely grow tired and want to eat soon. Is the chief singing instructor here?”
“I am!” another Brood Tender scuttled forward.
“Mozant, I’m glad you could come so quickly. I know you’ve been busy studying the musical form.”
“It’s all about structure,” the increasingly eccentric ant replied, “I don’t even need to hear it anymore.”
Theresant looked at her a little strangely. They… they were ants… technically they couldn’t hear, not like humans did. No ears, or ear drums to speak of, the members of the Colony interpreted vibrations using the fine hairs on their antennae and legs. Mozant had never been able to ‘hear’ music, not properly.
It didn’t matter.
“Well what can you make of this song the hatchlings insist on singing?” Theresant demanded. “Are you able to glean some meaning from it?”
“Give me some space, some space dammit!” the ant cried. “I can’t work in these conditions! Let me listen!”
Then she pressed herself against the two-way glass, antennae flat against the surface, picking up every tiny vibration emitted within the room. Theresant knew they had pushed to evolve Mozant to the fifth tier soon after her arrival in the hopes there would be some music or sound related organs and mutations she could make use of.
Other than the mane of long white hairs that ran down the back of the ants’ head, there wasn’t much visual difference between her and the other Brood Tenders, but her behaviour had certainly changed after the evolution. Studying music seemed dangerous for the mind….
“Yes… yes, I see… Fortissimo! Such power in the Rhythm! The rumbling Bass! The falling Alto! The soaring Soprano! The Tenor in support, an unwavering pillar! Such harmony, such beautiful, beautiful harmony!”
“What… what does any of that mean?” Theresant muttered.
“I’ve had to invent new terminology in the study of sound,” Mozant roared in reply. “Now Silence! I’m listening!”
The expert continued to mutter to herself, white hairs slowing standing up until Theresant was sure she could see them vibrating along with the sound from within the chamber. Other messengers came and went, more methods were tried to dissuade the chal from singing, but to no avail. The little snails had gathered together in the center of the chamber, all facing the same wall to the east and singing their little hearts out.
Even as an ant, Theresant knew the sound was beautiful, moving even, as young as they were, the snails were still capable of such profound vocal skills. Perhaps the curriculum the Tenders had created was working as intended?
“I have it!” Mozant declared with a maniacal laugh. “Yes. YES! It speaks to me, such music. WHAT MUSIC!”
“What? What have you learned?” Theresant demanded.
The white-haired ant rounded on her, mandibles snapping with incredulity.
“You don’t hear it? Listen to the timing-signature, the urgent rise and fall of the harmony! Surely you can understand, they are speaking with the language of the soul!”
Theresant raised a leg and slapped the ant across the face.
“We don’t have time for your nonsense,” she said in a clipped scent, “the well-being of the young is at stake. You are a Brood Tender, not a musician. Focus.”
Mozant staggered back, clutching at her head. Which didn’t make sense, Theresant’s legs were not made for striking, and as a being possessing an exo-skeleton, the musically inclined ant would barely have felt the blow at all.
“Yes… yes, I’m sorry. I was seized by the passion of the music. I apologise.”
Rising to her legs, Mozant straightened herself.
“They are singing an exhortation of some kind, a plea, if you will. A leg extended in song to another, hoping they will come and meet them halfway.”
“How can you be so sure?” Theresant asked.
She could understand the plea, the emotion underlying the song could be interpreted, but the rest?
“There are gaps in the melody. Listen for a moment, right…. Here!”
Both ants extended their antennae, heads tilted slightly.
“I’m… not sure I understand,” Theresant admitted. “I didn’t hear them sing much at all in that moment.”
“Exactly! The song is structured in layers, at times the chal rise, their plea coming to the forefront, and then in others they retreat, waiting for another to come forward and fill the gap, to sing back to them and join the harmony. There are openings all through the song. Gaps in every register that would take another choir to fill, to match their rhythm and make the melody complete.”
“But who are they singing to? Who are they waiting for?” Theresant demanded.
“I can’t say,” Mozart replied, clicking her mandibles sadly. “Perhaps if they hear what they want to hear, they will stop singing, but perhaps not, I can’t say. This is all I can glean from the song with my current knowledge. I’m sorry I can’t do more.”
Theresant pondered for a moment, eyes focused on the tiny snails continuing to sing without break.
“No… there may be more you can do. Don’t leave just yet.”

Making Mozant get slapped and be unable to really hear the music is *chef's kiss*

2025-09-21 00:52:44 +0000 UTCAlternative: The singing is about retrieving information from any Chal nearby. With the Krath near, the Chal may siphon all they can from unwitting Krath. The Krath hate it because it literally takes something from them. Theorazzn tries to stop the singing because it literally steals all the secrets/advantages the Krath have. Maybe its a kind of growing up they do, to become adults quicker. With the many Krath there, its just too beneficial to sing in that direction. They should mention what lies in that direction.

2025-04-28 09:01:07 +0000 UTCI wonder if Anthony can end up responding to them if it really is the language of the soul as God stuff seems to have a lot to do with the souls of creatures

2025-04-28 08:56:11 +0000 UTCTheresant's slap hurt Mozant because it was A concerned Mother's Thwack. Haven't seen The Queen for a while. Wonder how she's been. Go, Chals, sing. Sing. Annoy the Filth out of the Decaying World.

2025-04-28 08:50:22 +0000 UTCAre they perhaps singing to a different ancient? Did the chal species make a deal with a different ancient besides Theo?

2025-04-28 08:00:42 +0000 UTCInteresting. Are the Chal singing to the Krath and hoping for a response?

2025-04-28 07:14:42 +0000 UTCChal are barely 2 month old. I guess they don't want to mind bridge with newborns.

2025-04-28 07:13:02 +0000 UTCHow fascinating. Hang on, shouldn't the ants have considered mind bridging with the Chal by now? Get down to it, why didn't they do that early? I'd say it was because they were young, but there have been mind bridges with children in the story.

2025-04-28 06:17:08 +0000 UTCOh no.. there is no other choir.. are they singing to their source of magic? An honouring of some kind. A ritual of gratitude. An affirmation of their way of life. Or are they singing to the hidden Ancient candidate in the 5th? They can feel him! We want the hidden Chal to interact with his new siblings! Except that puts him in danger. Maybe the Chal gonna sneak into the fortress and just appear with the other Chal. Their stalks all peering at a dark spot at the wall. The Brood Tenders getting confused. Then the Chal just dispersing throughout the room, as if nothing strange happened.
