Shane always drinks ginger ale and is very rigid about his schedule. An underlying motif in this episode is that the only place that Shane could get the ginger ale was with Ilya, the one place where he could be himself. Everywhere else he tried to get the ginger ale he couldn't, and in those places he was forced to be what people expected him to be. The ginger ale is a representation of Shane being Shane.
