Camp Pinewood 2—the game that never happened.

While I’m working on the next update (coming this month!)...

I have an interesting story to share today about the unsuccessful development of Camp Pinewood 2—the game that never happened.

2020
Why Camp Pinewood (the Original Game) Was Left Unfinished
In 2020, I visited South Korea for some very important personal reasons. Even then, the development of the original Camp Pinewood was already in trouble. To be honest, I even briefly thought about ending it all dramatically—with an asteroid crashing into the camp and everyone dying. But that seemed way too harsh, even for me! Another classic issue was constant technical problems—I switched engines several times, rebuilding the project over and over.

Around the same time, I underwent a significant surgery, which had a huge impact on my physical state. While recovering, I could finally reflect clearly on what I wanted to do next. I decided it was time to create Camp Pinewood 2, incorporating fresh ideas and concepts I'd been holding onto since the first game. It felt like the perfect moment.

The Birth (and Rebirth) of Camp Pinewood 2

Right after sketching my first character concept—Hana (inspired by D.Va from Overwatch)—I immediately sensed a fresh vibe for the new game. Feeling inspired and, admittedly, overly ambitious, I went ahead and drew every single character before even starting any actual game development. (On a side note, some of these characters have never been seen by anyone.) Was this a mistake? Absolutely.

Turns out, the audience didn't like the new art style. And you know what? Fair enough! The negative feedback hit me hard—I still feel it—but I understand people have every right to say what they dislike. Realizing I'd made a mistake, I spent several months redoing all the artwork to better match the style players loved.

I need to share something else here—not as an excuse, just a fact of life: for years, I've had a hand condition similar to carpal tunnel syndrome. Drawing for long periods is painful, and switching tablets didn't help. Eventually, I had to change my lineart style completely. Ironically, I've been drawing with this problem for years, even though it hurts. (But hey, I can still work, so everything's okay!)

Anyway, after redoing everything, the new (old?) style matched the original game's feel better. Frankie, in particular, looked much closer to her original version, which fans seemed to appreciate. What version is your favourite, btw?

The most interesting part is that Camp Pinewood 2 originally had a completely different plot. It was deeper, more thoughtful, and heavily focused on technology. There was even a location with a bridge central to the storyline, and AL played a more crucial role. The plot wasn’t initially centered around Jane, either, though some aspects survived into the final concept. I spent countless days trying to adapt my ambitious storyline to fit the new visual direction. It was exhausting, to say the least.

What's next?
As many of you know, this experience eventually evolved into the idea for Camp Pinewood: Remix, which will finally conclude the storyline from the original game. It won't be exactly the same story, but I promise it’s canonical, connecting neatly to future projects.

Thanks so much for sticking with me through all these ups and downs! I deeply appreciate your patience and support. I make mistakes (clearly!), but your feedback helps me learn. Hopefully, you'll be gentle with me when I start my next big project, AMX. After that, who knows? Maybe we'll even see Camp Pinewood 3 one day! ;)

Thanks again, and have an amazing day!

To be honest I really liked Camp Pinewood 2. In some places even more than the current game. It had many interesting and unusual scenes, it even somehow got me more excited. I would like to see a lot added to the current version of the game.

I liked every part of your development over the years. I also liked the CP2 art style. You're doing great work and care about the community. Looking forward to every future step. Take your time for the good work and also take personal time when necessary. Cheers.

Been following along since 2016 roughly. I absolutely love the effort you put into it. Sadly I haven't played much since 2020 cuz PC issues left and right. Just got android remix. Definitely see a HUGE difference. It's truly remarkable to see how far you have come through it all! In my eyes, no need to apologize ^.^ things happen, life happens. All you can do is hit life back twice as hard my friend 💙 Per your question, I honestly like the OG Frankie, nice mix of your current and CP 2 style. Love your style overall though!

Interesting, I never seen the original art for camp pinewood 2 but I think it’s really good. On the other hand I can understand why people would miss the simplistic style of the original camp pinewood. There’s something relaxing about the games simplicity that I think allows people to kill a lot of time playing it. It fills a void in a niche genre

Man if I had to say my favorite art style it would be camp pinewood 2 then camp pinewood 1 and remix tied with the rework being in last place but hey everyone has differnt likes and dislikes. Keep up the great work your doing and know you are appreciated!!!!

Personally I still prefer the original camp pinewood art style but they all look hella good. I used to follow the free updates of the original then one day heard nothing about the game, I rediscovered your account last years and I replayed the original before going on the 2, still not finished but I was too curious and started playing the remix soon after. Loving the plot of the remix and the second game even though I don't like the moving between places, I still like the game a lot overall. The cartoony art style fit the atmosphere of theses characters way more than the more human version you made even though I'm pretty sure you put more time into theses designs they feel out of place yet are really good looking. Loving your content and will subscribe whenever I got spare money^^

Kronk* Ah yeah!, it's all coming together That would explain several details that felt "unfinished" in terms of game mechanics (crafting workshop at the boys' camp for ex.) and why we were so alone on our side of the camp (the two missing male campers) But to think that you were doing that entire project (CP2) with your recovering hand. It makes me feel bad that I have demanded more content/events. Even to, CP2 has a lot of content. But in the end that will always serve as a way to explore and perfect development techniques for other projects. (if it does not affect your health or scheduled financing) About the designs. Although the 2020 Prototypes were faithful to those of CP1, they did not retain the aesthetics of the character they parodied (They were similar to Bratz characters) Therefore, they are more recognized in their last 2 versions. Although all that can change depending on whether in other projects you decide to use only OCs That said, I liked CP2. Being able to explore the camp on foot gave a little more immersion and anticipation when coming and going without knowing if we would activate any surprise events along the way. Not being the 100% alpha male when sharing girls with the guy in the dinner, etc etc. The one thing that needed to be done in that story, was to have "cured" little Francine and given her her well-deserved affection after everything that happened in the game. So good information behind the scenes, and looking forward to how the AMX project will turn out. psd: The lack of Madeline in CP2 was hard, but well compensated between A.Francine and lois 🤣😎😎

We appreciate your work❤️ I know that Camp Pinewood Remix will be awesome🫶

I personally like the first look at "Jane" and our current version of Frankie. I appreciate this little lore dive my dood! You are killing it and we all understand if/when you need to take breaks. Drawing is taxing on both mind and body. I dabble here and there in drawing and it sucks even after an hour some days. Big shoutout to you being the GOAT you are. Stay safe king.

Lotus

I like the style that you had before re-working it a lot more, but all of them are definitely great, hopefully you’re able to output something that follows your idea for a storyline

CONNODO

All you need is a perc 30 bro, trust.

Wow Vaultman! This is so cool to see! I heavily appreciate all the work you’ve put in for us and the constant transparency.
