Quick Q regarding BL3
Added 2021-12-17 19:38:04 +0000 UTCShould I put it on Steam? They take a 30% cut of sales, so I only want to do it if there's a lot of support for it. Otherwise it'll just be available to download from itch.io and/or Gumroad.

Putting it on every platform would increase your reach, but I personally wouldn't want my friends being notified that I was playing nsfw games 😰. If it's profitable and good for your brand to do all platforms, I say go for it

2021-12-19 06:11:11 +0000 UTCI really don't mind, but I'd say it's not worth going to any extra trouble to put it on Steam if it interferes with development. I'd not buy in on Steam if it was available via other marketplaces because I don't like DRM.

2021-12-18 12:24:30 +0000 UTCStick to ur guns jam, I’d rather see it outside of steam just to know it’s 100% pure profit in ur pocket instead of any cuts lol

2021-12-18 03:31:17 +0000 UTCIt'll be on Gumroad and itch.io no matter what, so don't worry

2021-12-18 00:11:44 +0000 UTCBondage Lily 3! It's a small game I'm working on. 😊

2021-12-17 23:27:10 +0000 UTCId rather at least have an option to purchase it outside of steam. I don’t feel comfortable advertising to my friends what Im in to.

2021-12-17 23:26:43 +0000 UTCSame here? What is BL3?

2021-12-17 23:01:20 +0000 UTCAhh yah better way to put it 🧠😁

2021-12-17 21:08:08 +0000 UTCI'm ignorant, what's BL3?
2021-12-17 21:05:07 +0000 UTCI guess it depends on whether or not you want to expand the possible people who view your work. If you don’t really care about that it’s probably not worth the pay cut for something that almost all of us would buy not on steam anyway

2021-12-17 20:57:10 +0000 UTCyeah that's not a bad idea as well. you could also just give out steam keys for anyone who buys on itch or gumroad, since you can give those out free of charge still iirc. that way the people buying solely to put in their library can still get that even if they buy on itch/gumroad

2021-12-17 20:33:38 +0000 UTCI was considering that last idea too, although I'd prefer to think of it as a discount on other platforms rather than a markup on Steam 😉

2021-12-17 20:31:29 +0000 UTCHmm. Kind of a tough call. Like hnmenax said, more channels = more sales opportunities. But if you get any channel shift--people buying on Steam that would have otherwise bought on Itch--you'd be receiveing a lower percentage of sales. Not sure if that would even happen though. Or be significant enough to matter. Another idea- maybe you can mark up the price point on Steam to offset their steeper revenue share?? Edit: yup, didn't see your comment from a couple mins ago, you're way ahead of me 😂

2021-12-17 20:28:54 +0000 UTCI would legit love to get the question from my friends “what are you playing” when it pops up that I play it. So yea I’ll buy it if it goes to steam, that sounds fun and hilarious 😂😁

2021-12-17 20:27:45 +0000 UTCThat makes sense. I was also thinking I could make the game cheaper on non-Steam platforms, or release the Steam version later.

2021-12-17 20:18:50 +0000 UTCA lot of adult indie devs put their stuff on Steam, so I was thinking about trying it!
jam-orbital
2021-12-17 20:13:30 +0000 UTCMaybe! My art is kinda niche though so I think most people who would see it on Steam and be interested would probably already know about me. The negative side is that Steam takes 30% of sales revenue. (itch.io takes 10% by default.) The 30% cut is only worth it if a lot of people aren't willing to buy the game anywhere else.

2021-12-17 20:11:39 +0000 UTCimo, the best solution is just to put them on every platform you can. people from here/your existing fanbase will most likely buy it on itch to support you and you get the exposure just from your game being on steam.
hnmenax
2021-12-17 20:06:49 +0000 UTCI didn't know about that. It'll be on itch.io either way, so no worries!
jam-orbital
2021-12-17 20:05:09 +0000 UTCWell now I’m curious. What made you consider putting the game onto Steam?
2021-12-17 20:02:39 +0000 UTCI'd say why not just for the sake of even if people don't buy it they can see who made it and they may go "I like the art I wanna see more of what they do" which could add to your following and eventually maybe a new patron even. You miss %100 of the shots you don't take and I don't see a negative to also having it on steam.

2021-12-17 20:00:26 +0000 UTCI don't think Steam is worth the trouble due to region locks for lewd games (Germans get literally no digital kinky action on there). Itch.io ftw!
ThatDino
2021-12-17 19:58:02 +0000 UTCThat's not really an issue for me since I'm not trying to actually reach potential customers through Steam. I'll be doing that via DA/Twitter/Patreon like I do with all my other stuff.
jam-orbital
2021-12-17 19:49:21 +0000 UTCI wouldn't advise it. Besides them taking a decent chunk of sales, it's also really hard to have a game on there because it'll be lost in all the other games that come out.
BigBoi99
2021-12-17 19:45:06 +0000 UTCThat's how I feel too! There are a ton of lewd games on there though, so I figured there must be a market for them.
jam-orbital
2021-12-17 19:42:26 +0000 UTCThe main issue with lewd games on Steam is that you can't keep your games roster private, and I don't think a lot of people want to make an alt just for that.
The Deaf Mans Lands
2021-12-17 19:41:15 +0000 UTCI'm going to do that either way.
jam-orbital
2021-12-17 19:38:58 +0000 UTCWhy not put it on itcho?
