Sabbath reflection: years ago I read a biography about Eric Liddell, of Chariots of Fire fame. He wouldn't compete in the 1924 Olympic 100 metres because the heats where held on a Sunday. I have great respect for this. Nevertheless what has really stuck with me came later, in the Japanese prison camp where he died. The prisoners organised a sports club, to keep up morale and physical health. Eric was asked to oversee this, he refused because (you guessed it) it was on Sundays. The first meeting was chaotic! The second meeting Eric, having prayed and with a clear conscience before God, was there to organise the event. I hope that I have remembered the details accurately.

2024-07-01 10:48:35 +0000 UTCFavorite parts of a wedding are the traditional wedding vows. Every time the groom is reciting them I recite them to my wife all over again, even if she’s not there. She knows this and expects it every time. Secondly, as the bride first walks in, every time I watch the grooms face just to see his reaction. Gets me every time.
