The Missional Discourse is waaaaaayyy different than the Sermon on the Mount, but I love it when we get to the big long speeches. Hope you're enjoying it too.

Hi Matt - you hinted at Matthew 11 coming up and I wanted to ask you something I’ve wondered about. I’ve heard a few sermons where the pastor mentioned story of John the Baptist’s disciples coming to ask Jesus if he is the one. I’ve heard Matt Chandler use this story several times, and heard it at my own church. The pastors said that the list Jesus gives them are all Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah. And that Jesus leaves one off the list that everyone, including John the Baptist, would have known, and would have realized was missing - the prisoners are set free. In other words, he was telling John “Yes, I am the one... but you are going to die in prison.” I’ve always been drawn to this story because it strikes me as real life. Jesus is the Messiah... but that doesn’t mean everything goes just how you want it. In contrast to some of the more optimistic interpretations of Jesus always having plans to prosper you, or all the way to the Prosperity Gospel interpretation. Care to comment when you get to Matthew 11? Is this a valid reading - or reading too much into it? Hoping you don’t ruin one of my treasured verses of the Bible. ;)
