New series announcement !

Hi everyone! I’m excited to say what the next long series on the channel is! The first intro video should be out this month or early December, with the first actual chemistry video coming out shortly after that.

The series is:

Cubane: The quest for 100g

We are once again making Cubane 1-4 dicarboxylic acid, but no longer satisfied with only a few milligrams, and we are scaling up to try and get at least 100 grams of the final product. While this will be a lot more satisfying than the small amount previously made, there are a lot of technical challenges to overcome with scaling up this much… but it should be achievable, especially as we’ve shown that we can in fact do every step and it all does work in theory! We just have to make it work in practice…

I’m looking forward to putting out a video explaining this new quest, the hurdles we have to overcome and hearing suggestions in the comments on how we might safely and sanely overcome the challenge.

Also— a reminder that the Patreon is moving to monthly rather than per-video soon, so if that seems like a big change (which it is! Because I have not been posting Ex&F videos monthly) then you can step down to even the free tier if you want! Is all cool.

Thanks!

Tom

Hey Tom ! I would like to help for free in your scaling up quest. It is exactly my field of study. I also want to help because of the safety hazard associated with scale up. I don't want you to end like so many ambitious home scientists. Feel free to contact me if interested :)

Not a chemist, but I do have some experience with….aquariums lol no idea if this would work but when you mentioned the flow chemistry UV reaction I immediately thought of a UV sterilizer. They make large ones made for sterilizing pond water, basically just a tube with a pump on one end, UV light somewhere in the middle, and an outlet. You could put a bunch of methanol in an aquarium or bucket and rig one of those up? 😂 no idea if it’s the right wavelength or anything. Like I said, not a chemist. I drive big boats for a living and mainly watch your videos because you’re very entertaining.

Awesome the quest for the cube 2 electric bugaloo

Good luck bud

Maybe a chance to team up a little with Chemiolis? I know he did this last year.

Tim Waters

Wooo! Large scale chemistry is exciting

Tristan Youngquist

Very nice! I was hoping to try and make some cubane as well, so would be nice to learn from how you scale up.

I'm always glad when creators switch to monthly contributions; I want people to take their time making cool stuff rather than trying to get it out the door quickly.
