Christmas Chemistry

Hope everyone had a great Christmas this year! Christmas in Australia means holidays with long, sunny days (although it did rain on Christmas this year here which is pretty odd) which are perfect for doing chemistry.

I’ve gifted myself some new element samples and am excited to do some inorganic chemistry.

There’s some colourful rhodium chemistry I will attempt, assuming we can dissolve it into solution okay… pictured is the 1/2 a gram sample I have- wasn’t cheap! But it is fun to work with such a rare element.

With the germanium- I’m hoping to make some bismuth germanate glass. Might be a really long episode, as we need GeO2, and to get there from Ge we might have to go via GeCl4, but it’ll be a lot of fun if it’s perhaps an hour episode of Extract&Ire, and it’s definitely the time of year for me to attempt such a thing.

Also coming up will be a Cubane wrap up video, answering some Q&As about it. Also I plan to edit together all the Cubane videos into one, incredibly long single video… just several hours of uninterrupted chemistry… it’ll be nothing new but some people really like this sort of extreme long format content, so it sounds like fun.

Haven’t worked out what I’m doing for the next Ex&Fire, but we haven’t had some good explosions in a while, so we are overdue for a proper explosives episode I think. Or at least an obscure explosives episode! Gotta blow some things up!

Oh I’m jelly! I wish it was warm and sunny with green grass here during the holidays! I consider myself lucky if Christmas is 5 Celsius!

This needs to be added to the merch store!

Merry New Years Mate! Excited for your project to drop. Also, how long did your shipment from Onyxmet take? Mine is taking over a month so I got a feeling it is actually on a ship lol. P.s keep rocking us with your unique science humour this year, thanks.

Hi there. I recently dropped out and re-enrolled into Uni so I see myself in need of a nice lab coat. I would love to have a lab coat with the ex&f logo on there. Already have a normal one but that one is for the corpse's, still need one for chem

Merry Christmas man! How about some ass shattering decaborane and nitric acid?

I'm not exactly sure how you'll get yellow tar out of this but if anyone can it's you. We believe in you 😜

Jake Anderson

No worries, I'll just send you some.

Haha I feel like everytime I come up with an idea, I should check the TurtleHoard website to see if there’s samples available haha. Definitely I will buy some of those samples from you, it would be great to compare- because I assume I won’t be able to make anything particularly good

Explosions&Fire

Want some samples of monocrystalline bismuth germanate? I have samples of rough and faceted BGO12 and BGO20. It's a bit soft but incredibly fiery and dense; BGO20 is the densest available gem material, 80% as dense as lead. It has a similar uncanny heft to tungsten (tungsten is much denser of course but it feels extra weird since bgo is transparent).

Gems of Science

Can't wait for both of the upcoming episodes. I do hope your holiday was a good one. Cheers

Merry Christmas mate! It’s blocking anything below 2um from memory, so should be able to see right through it with the thermal camera, which will be very cool- and pretty much the reason I got the Ge disk as well as the bulk sample (thought the bulk sample would be in smaller pieces, the thermal camera might be able to see through that lump too!)

Explosions&Fire

That's fair, makes a lot of sense

I think it’s feasible to make, but not feasible to blow up well. It runs into the same issue as a TNT video would. You can make the cool compound, but making an explosive and then not blowing it up properly almost feels insulting to the viewer… It’s hard to think of me properly rigging a detonator and blowing up a secondary in the backyard, and I don’t think I could convince anyone else to help me blow up home made stuff here in Aus haha

Explosions&Fire

Ooh, Germanium. I wonder if you can manage to view IR light through it on camera? I managed to see a little bit of a blur of light with an IR security camera emitter through a cast germanium ingot pointing at another IR camera. It’s not much but it’s weird to see light through a solid block. Merry Christmas, man!

Would love to see a TATB Ex&F episode, if that's even feasible
