New Intro and Discourse updates

Dear Patrons,

Thanks for the feedback on the last post. My main take home points:

- People like the sound of the tier structure

- But only if it's not onerous and detracting from my time and impacting videos.

I'd just like to reassure that I proposed those tiers as an improvement in my current workflow and an increase in efficiency. I already tend to the community section here daily and the discourse forum will replace that, but with greater ease of use. In January I was a guest on two live streams which was quite manageable. If all of this proves too much we can re-discuss later.

There was a technical hitch with the discourse setup that was fixed by support earlier in the week. It is very close to ready, and when it is you will just log in with your Patreon credentials. Integration with Patreon is automated which is why it will be so good for me to run.

In the meantime, here is a preview of the new intro. The outro will be rejigged next. I will remove my face and change the credits format so it's not scrolling so fast.

Thanks all, the next video is one requested here: reusing your old 3D printer main board for Arduino projects.

Michael

New Intro and Discourse updates

Comments

New Patron, first post. Love the new intro, very "Hawaii Five Oh". :-D

Christopher J Reed

The Intro directly after the cannon during the logo build out.

David Rolling

I use one of those sampler based programs and this was an 80s theme one, you picked it.

Teaching Tech

You mean the tail part of the intro or the outro segment with the credits?

Teaching Tech

I like the new intro. Keep up the good work!

John Penny

I'm always amazed to observe professionals in their craft. Peter Richard's observations resonated not because I noticed those, but once he pointed them out they are obvious. Michael same with you and the content of your videos. Love observing from experts. I have one comment regarding the audio (regardless of the music ultimately selected). The current/old music became very loud at the end. This presents the problem when watching via my YouTube equipped TV in the evenings. Starts out normal volume, get loud at which point I quickly grab the remote to turn down the volume only to immediately turn the volume back up to normal volume (I never think to hit Mute). So my suggestion is the overall volume remain consistent with your actual videos.

David Rolling

What software do you use for the animation ? I'm not gonna dare say that you can do it in Blender fairly fast xD because if you don't know Blender then the learning curve is gonna take a while. But if you do know Blender, animation nodes, a few planes, and the video editing bench will let you do that sort of animation fairly quickly and easily. However, I actually do like the lines overall. I think it's more the videos underneath that I would change. Especially because you have some really cool shots in your videos already and seem pretty video savy ! :)

Leo Blondel

Compared to your current intro this one is less fresh feeling when I hear the music. I think the clips are not as important as having the right music. The feel I get hearing it make me think of a "Stranger Things" montage. I'd be more enthused for something faster and brighter.

Tyler Zlatkus

It's really time intensive to make the moving stripes animation so unless I miss some videos to make it happen it's not realistic for a complete make over. The intention is just a freshen up.

Teaching Tech

I think it's a balance between looking professional for a first time viewer vs not being annoying for repeated viewing. It could be a little shorter I agree.

Teaching Tech

I really agree with Peter as well, this seems like a tweaked version of the intro, instead of a real remodel that feels more 2020

Leo Blondel

I Like intro’s that are showing the channel name with a themed background with some swoosh sounds and that’s it. Like really really short. Intro’s to me are annoying, they do not have any value , are boring and repetitive and a waste of time in my opinion.

TechWithKramer

Keep up the good work Michael. Please don't take this as a negative but I always skip the intros and go for the main topic. After all I didn't come to be entertained, I come to learn from teaching tech.

I strongly agree with Peter. I like the animations, the music is pretty good, but I really think you could find better video clips. The Polysher is foggy by design and probably not recognizable to most; the laser cutting looks like it’s gone wrong with a square over a circle; the little car hitting the ball is far away and doesn’t make any sense to me. The groot is actually my favorite because that style of time lapse is just so cool. And I don’t think groot has gone out of style quite yet (if the actual model shown even matters). I love your channel and your work and it’s always so intriguing and well thought-out; I’d hate to see it represented with anything less.

All we are interested in is that you continue what you did so far. We will continue supporting you to the best of our abilities.

Martin Pirringer Old Dude with a Pulse

I like the new intro more than the previous one so I'm glad you made the change.

gizmo bowen

Thanks Peter, great feedback. I agree with everything you've said.

Teaching Tech

The line work animations and the logo look great, and the length is perfect.

Peter Richards

Putting my critical video production hat on, (please take this as constructive feedback, this is what I do for a living, it isn't meant to be 'mean' criticism, but constructive) the muted colour grade might be too muted, that and the content of the videos give it a dated feel, almost like footage from the 70s. The tone of the music is a bit of a mismatch for the images. The music has an epic or even TRON-like feel, it would work really great with Daft Punk/Tron style imagery, bright colours amongst dark backgrounds. The images shown are a little too lacklustre for the electronic vibes. The content/images also feel a little dated, baby Groot was big in 2014/15, half a decade ago now, and the laser cutter image is okay but it would be cool if you had some footage of it cutting something more visually interesting, or from a more dynamic angle. The watermelon sequence looks out of place too, it isn't clear what that would be relevant to, but not quite interesting enough to make someone want to click to find out. Overall if I watched the montage I would get that the channel is probably about 3D printing and maybe laser cutting, but it could also be a props maker channel. Either way it doesn't entice, and you have much better framed shots in some of your videos that would suit the dynamic music better. I'd think about shooting some short clips just for the intro that tell the story better of what you do, and intrigue the viewer, or have a more professional feel. Your channel is one of the most professional and informative out there, I don't think that is conveyed with the new opener. Having said all that, the main thing is that the intro isn't grating or obnoxious, and this is neither of those things.

Peter Richards

Apart from the watermelon not exploding on impact with the car, it is nice. The music is a little Dystopian, but so much better than channels with crazy loud or discordant music, especially when you discover their channel and go on a binge, it gets old really fast.

Peter Richards

I like the new intro quit a bit. All projects featured have been apart of the channel, really good intro music, a very fresh update for 2020. Nice! Can’t wait for discourse to go live. Can. Not. Wait.

Brandon Wolfe

I find it refreshing. There was nothing wrong with the original intro, but this one just has a nice “pull factor” to it. Maybe you can incorporate both with each intro specific to a theme.

K4rm4

The music is a bit 'dark' sounding. I've gotten used to it, so it's good to get feedback from fresh ears. I'll keep tweaking.

Teaching Tech

Hi Michael, the audio seems "less zippy" compared to your current intro, but it probably doesn't matter. Cheers, JAYTEE

JAYTEE

What about using your previous song in a dubstep remix ?

EmE Creative LaB

Looks good... I would prefer it if the melon exploded when the RC car hits it, but that's just me.

Patrick Immel

Like the video clips, music is a little spooky 🎃
