January 2024 Update Post

Here's a quick update on what's been happening at The Serial Port!

Our video on the Apple Airport was published earlier this month, the idea came to us from Doug Karl who delivered the software for the initial Airport product.  We'll actually be meeting up with Doug Karl in a few weeks and will be discussing some other video ideas related to his work in the 1990s with networking.

equipment haul:  We added a Cisco 7200 VXR router and a Juniper M7i to the collection for ISP tinkering later on.  We also received a Cisco 6506 chassis-based switch for a video we'd like to work on later in the year.

Current project:  We are bringing a PC's Limited 286 back to life and will be making a Youtube video about this system to be released in the next few weeks.

Longer term project:  We have a list of FTP-related topics for future video[s], including Archie which was an indexing and search tool for public FTP sites.  We did a video interview with Alan Emtage, the creator of Archie recently.

We're also rebuilding our network / VoIP system for the dial-up ISP and hope to have it back online in a better state for our Patrons soon.

Thank you for your support!

Much better rates should be achievable! Testing in a local network, we were getting 31.2k consistently.

What is the fastest baud rate you have been able to connect to the ISP over VoIP. It's been a long time but I remember not doing better than 2400 because of compression my provider used (IIRC).

Looking forward to the new videos 😀
