I have a theory and I need to know whether it passes the sniff test. All the metrics I see that take into account on/off data for this year and the last paint Jokic as somewhere between a really good defender and an all time great defender, and I think it's quite overstated. This year, the Nuggets' defense is 17 points per 100 better with Jokic on the court, which demonstrates that he's likely around 17 points better than his the players subbing in for him on that end. If I'm not mistaken, most metrics that use this data (such as Raptor) look at their prior ratings for the players replacing him and add that 17 points to them, with adjustments for who else is on the floor with them and who they are playing against. My theory is that the prior assessment of Jeff Green, who has been backing Jokic up this season, shows him to be an average defender, and so Jokic's impact looks phenomenal (after all, he is 17 points better on defense than an average defender,) but that this doesn't account for the fact that while Jeff Green may be a decent defensive piece, he's not even close to decent when playing the role of rim protector, and so Jokic's +17 is in comparison to someone more like a -10, and not a 0.0. Is that a plausible expalanation of his seemingly overstated impact?
