Vagabonds Chapter 14 Part 1

Chapter 14 was big, too big, so I split it into two parts. I’m not happy with the cut off, but it’s whatever.

Anyway, this chapter goes into the two bounty hunters that captured Chara earlier, Alisa and Frank. I feel I could have done descriptions better, but I admit they are my weaksuit. The relationship between these two kind of expresses my view on augmentation again, similar to Keus. I find this kind of funny because I point the overall antagonistic forces as anti-augment, but none of the protagonists (barring mitzi and Gel) are really that heavily augmented themselves.

Frank’s situation is something I link akin to simple addiction. Like, plastic surgery addiction. You go through a change in pursuit of something, see that it works, and keep doing it well past what you original needed until its all you are. The more human parts he lost, the less human Frank became. Now, technically this shouldn’t really change his personality. But when you remove senses like touch, taste, and smell, I imagine it’s gonna alter who you were before. Being unable to really feel things on a physical level should mess you up. That’s not to say Frank is a bad person, or even one to be pitied. He did this because he wanted it, even if Alisa is disturbed by it.

I also wanted to introduce my views on mind reading, hence on Auger. See, in most media with one, we’re always presented with the lack of a language barrier. So I figured the only way to really defeat a mindreader is being so multilingual that you can think in a different language that they can’t understand. Unless they, by some form of logic now that I think about it, find a way to sift through your other language knowledge and translate it. So maybe just monolingual in a language they don’t understand? Idk, I didn’t think that far.

On the topic of mindreaders, and something Alisa mentally points out, they are scary as all hell. Your mind is your last bastion of privacy. We all have automatic thoughts, but can you imagine someone seeing those automatic thoughts of yours? It’s such a violation that mind reading is almost an eldritch horror concept to me.

Anyway, part 2 in two weeks.
