Vagabonds Chapter 8

So chapter 8. In this chapter, I decided to explore a few science fiction tropes and work my dialogue muscles.

The first trope I wanted to explore was lightspeed/teleportation, and how it feels to go through it. I’ll admit, I mainly did this because the media in which I engage in these tropes (movies, TV shows, and comics) never goes into detail on this (I’m sure some might) because they can show you. I figured the allegory of a fish pushed to a different sea fit it well, and Thax being sick sealed that idea for me.

The second was fast healing. By now it should be clear that Merida is someone special, or at least her DNA is. She heals incredibly fast, but this comes at a cost of needing more calories quickly. I know some media actually does display this downside (Strong Female Protagonist is what first comes to mind) but popular media seems to ignore this downside. And I kind of get why, since it’s probably not exciting to see Wolverine eat three burgers to get calories back after wounds closed. Still, it’s something I wanted to explore.

My dialogue muscles are…I’m gonna be honest, I like the responses I have between the crew, but in retrospect, I needed to be more clear on dialogue tags. I personally dislike them because I feel they slow down the pacing, but that’s when I’m writing. When reading, I think tags are glossed over beyond names. Plus, single-line paragraphs of dialogue are complicated. Back and forths without describing movements are complicated.

Still, Gel’s lines in this were fun to write. I should write assholes more.
