Vagabonds: Chapter 3

With chapter 3, we’re introduced to the fourth protagonist (deuteragonist?) of Vagabonds, Merida. A rich runaway who has her own reasons for going to Gygac Seven, and her trusty servant, Chara.

Before writing Vagabonds, I had written a YA fantasy novel (and it is written. I could just never get around to editing it properly. Fell too in love with certain scenes that rewriting new ones was too difficult) featuring a princess seeking adventure. I wanted to explore the ‘spoiled’ rich kid who isn’t actively trying to be spoiled, but doesn’t know better. Merida is a bit more like that, with comparisons to her own mother’s brazen attitude. But she’s a child, like ten years old or so, and has an innocent heart.

Granted, she’s basically homeschooled by a super computer. I wanted to capture her awkwardness in that regard, with how Mitzi interrupts her.

Speaking of which, more of Mitzi and Tolk are present in this chapter. When writing the goblin, I kind of wanted to make her more excitable than what I’ve done before. She’s smart, passionate, and skilled enough to solve problems how she wants to. Hence why she refers to her drones as her ‘wovley wittle babies’ rather than just drones. I also laid out some foreshadowing and hints that, sadly, never went anywhere because the story was never finished (Tolk’s missing data, Mitzi’s symbiosis system).

Descriptions are not my forte, but I tried to delve into just how much of a garbage ship the Tolk is. I’ve seen plenty of space faring science fiction (mostly anime) and junker ships always looked dirty because of your standard filth. No real cleaning. I figured a true junker ship probably has wires exposed and looks like it’s sticking together with duct tape and grit. A real mess.

In the next two weeks we head back to Gel. Stay tuned!
