Process: Broken Sky page 3

So here you go. A coloring process video. It’s greatly sped up, and even so it’s over an hour and a half. I can’t imagine anyone watching this for an hour and a half. I was surprisingly nervy making this. I felt like someone was watching over my shoulder recording and it made me even noodlier than usual. Compounding it this was also a pretty time-consuming page; a tough one where I didn’t do myself any favors with very unfinalized pencils, but I chose it for this anyway because it was a good balance of coloring characters and painting background (a lot of background, painted pretty blobbily from scratch, which is I think the thing most of you were wondering about how I go about doing – the answer is “blobbily and indecisively”). It has flatting, shading, painting, dialogue. A million mistakes. It’s a pretty good accounting of how I work, inefficiencies and all. Some things in it: • Indecision • Lack of prep/penciling and more indecision because of it • A few PS crashes; it wasn’t super pleased about the capture software running alongside • Some non-crash PS f-ups that result in the loss of a few minutes’ work • A few skips where I get record and pause mixed up like a doddering old person • A fairly uncurated bunch of music with you’ll probably mute 5 minutes in; if the selection doesn’t drive you away the quality will Things you don’t see: • Voiceover (well I guess you never see that, per se). I’m not ready for that level of intimacy and I don’t know what I’dve said for an hour and a half. • I have a second window open on my second monitor to see the whole thing zoomed out, which guides a lot of decision making that probably looks kind of random without it • I also have a few images I sample colors from open; my colors for John & Eliza (the seamstress), the previous page of the comic, etc.. Since it's non-narrated and so sped up I'm happy to field any questions or clarify anything I do (even the embarrassing things). I'll do another, probably non-video tutorial on concept development (a real one) closer to the end of Book 4. I've also added a new Patreon goal for unlocking monthly videos. This week has been pretty gross (post-op invalid husband, site issues, etc..), but you guys remain the best. Fondest regards,

That is friggin cool Erin! I've always loved how gorgeous NTO is, but this adds whole new level of appreciation ^.^ (Hope your husband has a speedy recovery!)
