Tutorial v0.5: Character Concept Development 1

It’s been partially due to plain ol’ keeping busy, but also because I’ve been sort of flummoxed by what shape it should take in spite of – because of, actually! – the poll I put to you guys. As far as subject, the majority of folks voted in favor of a concept development tutorial, and medium-wise most of you wanted a video. When I really thought about this I wasn’t sure how to easily dovetail the two. The best way to show you my conceptual processes would be to let you take a peek at all the preliminary sketching, traditional and digital, that goes into developing the setting and characters of a given book of Next Town Over, and I thought about letting you see my work on Book 7, but that’d involve spoilers. Nevermind the fact that I’m not sure how best to translate preconceptual work to a video with my limited time/video editing ability. The topical runner-up in the poll was my coloring process, something that lends itself much easier to a video, but to record myself coloring an NTO page and share it it’d have to be a page from Book 7, and, again, spoilers. So here’s my plan: for right now, have this PDF detailing my visual development of the principals from my Poor Wayfaring Strangers short. When it no longer constitutes megaspoilers I will also share my Book 7 conceptual materials accompanied by an in-depth walkthrough. And, when I am able, I will record and share a sped-up (necessary) overview of my coloring process on NTO proper. Remember: Book 7 starts November 2nd, and don’t forget the art contest!
