Once Japan opens up again for non-chaperoned tourism, I think I’d like to stay in more independently-run bed-and-breakfast type lodging, rather than a chain hotel (which sadly is what more and more AirBnBs have become). How would you recommend we find and book a stay at a minshuku? (Ryokans are great too, but they can be quite expensive 😓)

2022-08-19 16:44:38 +0000 UTCI've been thinking about certain YouTubers and celebrities suddenly appearing in Japan. It brought to mind the "Designated activities (Long Stay for sightseeing and recreation)" visa, which is available to nationals of certain countries having more than 30 million Yen in savings. It's a "tourist" visa in that you're not allowed to work while in Japan on this visa, but it's also not a "tourist" visa in that continuous stays of up to a year are permitted (sources say you are given a zairyu card similar to student/work visas). Visa is described in detail here: https://www.mofa.go.jp/ca/fna/page22e_000738.html Do you know if this visa ("Designated activities (Long Stay for sightseeing and recreation)") is actually available for application, and if so do you think this is the strategy those people are using to get around the individual tourist ban?
