Boruto was taken aback, memories of his and Sasuke's journey to the past flashing through his mind. They had been cautioned against interfering; such actions could lead to consequences they might never undo.
Toneri nodded solemnly. "That's correct. Back then, you were focused solely on retrieving Naruto's memories, but now the stakes are different. If you succeed this time, you will have the power to alter the fate of others."
Boruto hesitated, uncertainty simmering beneath the surface. "But altering the past... that can’t be without risks..."
Toneri interjected, "It’s true that excessive interference can unleash catastrophic results. However, in this instance, we’re only talking about changing one individual's fate. As long as you approach it cautiously, the risks should be manageable."
"So... how do we go about this?"
A spark of hope ignited within Boruto. If he could truly reshape Nanashi's past, he had to try.
Toneri explained, "Three specific conditions must be met to make this possible in a short timeframe."
Boruto's curiosity piqued. "Three conditions? What are they?"
Toneri raised his hand, extending his index finger. "First, we need to use an unstable space as our starting point. This space must have control over the laws of time."
“An unstable space... Could it be here?” Boruto contemplated, connecting the dots in his mind.
Toneri confirmed with a nod. "Exactly! [Ninja Hero] was developed by Tsukuyomi, so the flow of time is notably altered here, making it easier to connect to the past."
As he spoke, Toneri lifted his second finger. "The second condition is that it must be the night of a full moon. To access the passage to the past, we need the power of the dragon veins beneath us, which are most potent during the full moon."
Boruto quickly asked, "When's the next full moon?"
"Tomorrow," Toneri replied, raising his third finger, "The last and most crucial requirement is that we must have an object linking the present with the past, one that holds chakra from both individuals involved."
"This..."
Boruto’s mind raced as he recalled a significant item—an important treasure given to him by Nanashi. Should he really bring it forth?
Toneri added, "While it may be challenging, it's necessary. Without it, you risk becoming lost in the crevices of time and space."
"You understand the stakes I've shared with you," he urged.
Boruto fell silent, weighing the gravity of the situation.
Toneri gently prompted him, aware that he wouldn’t force Boruto into altering history. "You have the freedom to choose, but your decision is pivotal."
After a lengthy pause, Boruto finally found his voice. "...Alright."
The image of Nanashi’s unwilling face haunted him, her words resonating in his heart. She was his friend, one he couldn't help during the Warring States period but was determined to try and save now.
Boruto declared, "It is important that I will help Nanashi during that era, Mr. Toneri."
Toneri nodded in agreement. "Indeed, the Warring States period was pivotal to shaping Nanashi's character, as well as her destiny."
"If I can save her then..." Boruto’s fists clenched with resolve.
Toneri said, "I will be waiting here tomorrow night. If you are determined to alter Nanashi's fate, bring the items that establish a connection with her."
"Understood."
After logging out of [Ninja Heroes], Boruto's demeanor shifted dramatically; the previous melancholy that clouded him had lifted, replaced with unwavering determination.
As he rejoined Sarada and Mitsuki, they questioned his whereabouts, having seen his ID log in but not his presence in the game. Not wanting to raise their concerns, Boruto invented a quick story about a glitch that had kept him busy.
Mitsuki was unconcerned, relieved to see his friend safe, while Sarada sighed, frustrated that their gaming session had been disrupted by such complications.
After calming his friends, Boruto approached Himawari, requesting the return of the necklace he had gifted her. This item was the key for him to establish the vital connection with Nanashi
A pang of guilt tugged at him for taking it back, yet he knew it was necessary. To his surprise, Himawari, mature beyond her years, nodded and returned the necklace without hesitation.
[Uzumaki Boruto: Himawari is truly amazing.]
[Uzumaki Himawari: Hehehe!]
[Tsunade: Jiraiya, you are to maintain a distance of at least twenty meters from Himawari from now on.]
[Kushina: Exactly!]
[Jiraiya: Wait, I didn’t say anything.]
[Tsunade: Hmm? Do you have something to say?]
[Jiraiya: No! Not at all!]
[Namikaze Minato: Lady Tsunade, there's no need to be so wary of Jiraiya! He knows his limits.]
[Jiraiya: You're the best, Minato (ToT)! ]
[Kashin Koji: So this is my original...]
[Tsunade: Minato, don’t defend him. I know his character better than you do.]
That night, Boruto tucked the necklace into his pocket and donned the VR headset once more, the gateway to reuniting with Wuming.
With a burst of brilliant light, he entered [Ninja Heroes], finding himself again in the temporal gap.
Toneri, who had awaited his arrival, greeted him. "Do you possess the item that connects you with Nanashi?"
"Well... ah! I remember! It can't be brought in from the real world!!”
Boruto nearly agreed, but the realization hit him—the game world had restrictions against real items.
Toneri smiled reassuringly. "Fear not; as long as you keep it on you, I can summon it here."
With that, Toneri waved his hand, gathering ethereal light around them, and summoned the pyroxene necklace from nothingness.
Toneri caught it in his palm. "With all conditions in place, now I can use the environment of [Ninja Heroes] as a foundation to construct a gateway to the past. By harnessing the power of the dragon vein and utilizing the necklace as a conduit, I can send you back to when Nanashi lived."
Boruto's excitement bubbled over. "Next, we rescue her... but wait, what's the matter, Mr. Toneri?"
Sheren paused thoughtfully before speaking. "Before we interfere with history, there's one more crucial decision you must face.”
Boruto frowned, puzzled. "What choice is left to make?"
Sheren elaborated, "I mentioned that with careful interference, crises could be avoided.”
"Yes, so what’s the issue?"
"If you save Nanashi from her suffering in the past, then everything you've built together in this present will vanish into thin air."
"Huh?"
Boruto faltered, grappling with his emotions. If he saved Nanashi, how would have to sacrifice their connection?
Toneri clarified, "This is solely tied to her story. Once Nanashi is free from her seal, the absence of her will alter the course of events. Your role in the Zero revolt will also dissipate, along with the pursuit of your father’s past."
Boruto looked down, disheartened. "It can’t be...”
Toneri added, "Not just that; your bond with Nanashi, which was forged through the game [Ninja Heroes], would cease to exist without Nanashi's fate intact."
Boruto's voice trembled, "So, I have to decide: maintain my connection with Nanashi in this present or go into the past to save her at the cost of losing everything."
Toneri watched as Boruto wrestled internally, awaiting his verdict.
But instead, Boruto’s head shot up, resolute and unwavering. "No second thoughts! I won’t back down! My goal is to save Nanashi, no matter the consequences!”
Nanashi then probed further. "Are you truly willing to go through with it, even if it means losing that bond?"
Boruto placed his hand over his heart. "Once a connection is forged, it doesn't break easily! Even if I were to forget Nanashi, what matters most will stay in my heart."
"I see, perhaps I was overthinking this. You are truly remarkable, Boruto."
With Boruto’s unwavering determination, Toneri smiled, greatly satisfied. This was the man who would challenge fate itself—the son of Uzumaki Naruto.
