I usually will leverage both google maps and hyperdia.com to find all train lines I will be taking as well as which lines accept seat reservations. With that information, I will create a spreadsheet with date, departure and arrival times and stations and if available the train number of trains that accept reservations. When you arrive in Japan, you can provide the list to the JR Pass processing agent at the airport. The agent can reserve all your trains in advance after all your JR passes has been issued for your group. This saves time as you won’t have to keep waiting in lines at “Midori no madoguchi” for each train reservation. (However, please do your best to not miss your train reservation. As your seats are set aside for you, they cannot resell those seats even if you do not show.).
