My Japanese friend was in Sapporo during the September 2018 earthquake. One thing we noticed once again is that often people outside the disaster areas have better access to relevant info than the affected people. Other Japanese friends and I were able to continuously scan all available info and provide her with the most relevant. Like where she could charge her smartphone nearby and so on. It saves a lot of energy to have someone do it for you and you can focus on the important things.

I have inherited my grans power outage survival kit of keeping a stock pile of candles, matches, camping gas, tinned and dried foods. I have added blankets and socks for if it occurs during winter time.
