I flew 2-3 times from Chicago to KL, stopping in Tokyo overnight to change planes. That was a pretty long flight - it went over the pole, and down the Russian coast. The same route taken by KAL007, which the Soviets shot down. The alternative was to fly to San Francisco or Los Angeles and then from there via Hong Kong or Tokyo.
