West coast of BC Uni is starting to become popular here in Calgary. Quality seems decent. Depends where you go though. I’ve been to a small sushi place in Japan in Shinjuku and had a no so great Uni. It was just before closing however. Got to pick the good places. Getting unused to the texture helps, that and the freshness 😜.

That thumbnail - that's that "shake oyakodon" I saw at a local restaurant recently, I'll have to give it a try. Fairly inexpensive (by Japanese standards, but not by local standards - about 800 yen or so). They also had a - what was it called? Can't remember - there was some connection with Hokkaido. But it was a kaisendon with uni and ikura and snow crab. THAT was quite expensive (about 2000 yen or so) but since it's the only uni I've ever seen around here I'm keen to try it.

Thanks for moderating today!

I had REALL REALLY good ikura and uni and noticed that if it's not super fresh I can't eat it, esp uni! I think you eat it once then twice then the brain starts to like it. It's often offered so easy to just try - in Japan. Honestly, outside Japan, I'd skip it :P It does take time Vern. Natto was on my YUCK list for 3 years before I moved to Mito and then learned to love it.

John, how did you develop a taste for things like ikura and uni? Honestly, I can't eat them, yet I see people like yourself loving the stuff. It's regrettable that my palate isn't wider. What to do.
