My dad has one of those auto lawnmowers, it basically cuts a little bit every day so the grass is constantly short. What little it cuts each time is further diced into tiny pieces that are spat out as it goes along and end up acting as a kind of fertilizer for the grass. These pieces are small enough that they are not really noticable if you lie on the grass or wallk barefoot.
