How do they prevent abuse from happening? Do they have better things set in place to protect the participants? Not being antagonizing, just curious.

The Gabriel Fernandez documentary on netflix is really sad. The system is built to protect the company not the children.

The best alternative to the Boy Scouts is the Young Marines. Similar to the scouts with the camping and knot tying and stuff, but with a military edge to it. So you can lean discipline and leadership while learning first aid and how to make fire.

What's even crazier is that, I feel, this is the culmination of a long cycle of abuse of multiple organizations (Scouts, religious groups, homes/asylums, etc.), so the history probably extends way back...And to answer a that end question, it's probably because they're able to hide their abuse of power by that cloak of authority. People don't (or didn't in the past) question an officer, teacher, priest, etc. Those individuals were always assumed innocent and of good moral character or assumed to have moral intentions. That's my opinion of it. Not just the repression thing...And I'm guessing they could have been victims of abuse themselves, hence they cycle.
