Canada might have only "6 soldiers" but you don't need much when everybody loves you. We don't get many terrorist attacks, we don't join wars, we don't have many mass shootings (compare population, America is way off the charts still) and we don't have many riots.

I also wonder how long this has been going on. Is there evidence that this potentially spans hundreds of years?

In the past when being homosexual was unacceptable in society, gay men and women would join the cloth rather than try to live a heterosexual lifestyle, which led to an increase in the number of homosexuals among priests and nuns. Nowadays, you have the same thing happening with pedophiles or people with other sexual deviations.
