Server Fired for Refusing to Serve Transphobic Guests (ft. Kelsey Darragh)

Server Fired for Refusing to Serve Transphobic Guests (ft. Kelsey Darragh)

Comments

It takes two seconds to tell a server hey let me take your one table and you take this table it’s not rocket science

I’m a server and my managers plain and simple if we feel uncomfortable with a table they fix it or my co workers are always willing to step in and swap or help if need be but yes as a manager they need to have the employees back and I think it’s why I’ve stayed so loyal to the company I been with

It shouldn't matter what hill you choose to die on, it's not the point of the fight. In this broken society, you need to stand up for shit no matter where you are. Basic human decency, if they were being transphobic, kick them out. They are causing a disturbance. I'm 100% on Kelsey's side. Just because you're trying to run a business doesn't mean you can ignore the reality of the situation. One group of customers is making the other people uncomfortable. By dismissing your employees morals, you are missing the goal. It doesn't matter if you're having a private conversation if other people can hear. No one, in the restaurant, would have an issue if they kept that transphobic shit outside. If the staff has to show decency, why doesn't the customers? And honestly when Bart said he would serve a racist, it broke my heart. He'd choose money over the pain and suffering we Asians went through. Capitalism has proven to have failed another person. His belief in freedom is so strong that he will accept people calling him chink. Like hey Chink get my fucking food, you disgusting public shitting, only good for blowing themselves up for the railroads, dirty fucking peasant. Bart really let me down.

Kelsey wasn't getting it. the server was trying to be woke but the transphobic ppl were having a private conversation. If they were actually harassing or bullying the other table then I get it but she should've just minded her own business. same like saying im not going to serve a table bc my morals won't allow me to serve rude ppl. just suck it up and mind ur business

Steve was a little off today

Joe and Bart thinking only of the bottom line --> $$$$, true asians lol.

Joe really out here defending transphobia. The manager could of simply swapped the server with someone else and there won’t of been an issue. That if they are short on staff argument is invalid on the simply fact that if they were why would the then send her home. The management made it a big deal by firing her not her for refusing to serve a table

If there is a cause that you feel strongly about, "cancel culture" is not the way to make progress. You can bring up alternate view points respectfully to at least get your customers thinking without affecting your tip. Working in the south, I've encountered many xenophobic remarks & giving people simple "food for thought" comments is better than "canceling" the situation for your personal benefit. Getting someone thinking can at least get the thought ball rolling.

Amen Geo!

i see both sides and i think its so great that kelsey really held her own even in a group that she might not be super used to with (culturally/personally/etc) and this was just a respectful conversation with two legitimate responses

I agree with Geo

This is a hard one because I understand both sides completely. Everyone has their own morals and I think everyone goes through having to deal with their morals being challenged in some way. I don't think either party is wrong for their decisions. She made a choice and so did they. End of story. We don't even know if what she heard was what she thought she heard so who knows.

You dont have to go to a march or do some massive big thing if you care about transphobia or racism or whatever small things like this matters a lot

As a server myself, I understand that customers get out of hand and sometimes we do have to handle it ourselves when the manager has their hands full. That being said I do think that the server seemed to take it out of hand and the management staff did not take the best course of action either. I agree with Joe, some times you have to serve people who are racist or make uncomfortable comments.

I'm a server and i take on all of the customers my fellow servers don't want to handle because i like bein a bitch. :)

It seems to me like a lot of this news (similar to this situation) is not the problem of the people involved by the handling by the business/company. IT SEEMS as though instead of managing it, probably helping people to grow, they threw it away, getting rid of it because it was easier---which isn't always better.

Everyone's allowed to have their likes and dislikes, but when you're on job, you're expected to do your job, not preaching morals. Management could have handled the situation better though

The only thing that i completely disagreed on was when Kelsey said they should be punished. You can't punish people for thinking a certain way. They weren't harassing anyone. Also the whole you must take a stance thing is one of the biggest problems we have now in America

At the end of the day people got eat regardless of what they are. As long as they are not bother other people I don't see the problem with serving transphobic guests.

If the manager was not going to do her the favor of 1. Serving that table for her 2. Get another server to do it for her 3. Allowing her to ask another server to help her Then she clearly doesn’t have a good raptor with the manager and he/she had it with her and gave her that ultimatum. Any regular manager would do you that favor if you didn’t suck through the whole time you work there.

I definitely agree with Geo here. She understood both sides as well

For me it comes down to what the table was saying exactly. If it's a rant of 10 min and they bully the other table, you could interject. Maybe the waiter was overly sensible about this topic and any comments is too much. But I would be on the manager side.

If they were in a rush and she was sent home, that means an even bigger burden than just swapping with someone else or the manager stepping in to take that one table... I bet the other wait staff was pretty pissed.

conversations like these can get heated and tense real quick depending who's there, but i love that kelsey vibes with the crew so well and can still crack jokes and have a good time :)

In the US.. there are some federal rights, but it mostly done by the individual state you live in. But we also have the freedom to legally sue for what ever we want too.

We love people being transphobic 😍

Dave

I was out when she said they need to be punished...ppl can be neutral, this mentality that you're either with me or you're against me doesn't do anything but alienate the individuals who would otherwise be on ur side.

I wholeheartedly agree with Geo. Your first line of defense, your loyal team that will be there at the end of the day is your staff. At my work, if we are ever put in an uncomfortable situation with any customer it is our LEGAL RIGHT to remove ourselves from that situation and we can’t get fired from it (granted I live in Canada lol). Yes something could have been misinterpreted, but the solution to that isn’t to fire her, it’s to either take the responsibility as a leader/manager. I get what Bart and Joe are saying, you never want to lose out on business especially if it’s something in your eyes you believe is avoidable, but you can’t have a business if you don’t have staff and at the end of the day, they are just of a higher value than customers.

It's about time the rights of transphobic ppl are respected...what has this world turned into, when you cant be casually prejudice with your friends lol.

Everyone’s pretty right in this video. It would be different if the table was saying transphobic comments/opinions to the waitress, but she just overheard it. The manager probably woulda at least swapped her if more happened. Honestly, I think the girl just wants some attention and praise, like idk if she liked her job but if she did she’s probably hurt she got fired instead of her manager saying sorry to her and making her employee of the month. And if she didn’t like her job she could be just trying to hurt the business because she couldn’t last there.

I agree with Joe, tbh. I would hate the person that would put their politics before the job like serving but it honestly depends on what they said. Management handled it wrong at the end of the day

What we need is RESPECT!

Please do a OTR on weeeed

I'm with Geo. Also maybe this person feels passionate about stuff like that and has seen stuff like this a lot. Idk, it could be a cumbersome request, but manager could have handled it differently too.

I can definitely see both sides here. The manager has every right to fire an employee who isn't cooperating or deliberately going against the "team", but every person also has the right to choose to stand by their beliefs. I worked in a restaurant for years and know it gets hectic and crazy and oftentimes you can be unexpectedly short staffed due to a random rush on a typically slow day. If she asked to swap tables and they were able to do so then cool, issue avoided. If the manager explained they were not able to do so because it was way too busy then a good employee would have dealt with it. She chose her morals over being a good employee and that's on her. As long as the girl understands why she was fired and isn't up in arms about it then this is really a non-issue. She made her choice and got the consequences for it. Personally, I've served tons of people I didn't want to be serving and that's part of the job. As long as people aren't making other customers uncomfortable then they have a right to get what they're paying for. And I agree with Nikki, it can be hard to accurately judge a conversation you're just hearing bits and pieces of.

that was actually a really interesting conversation. i was with kelsey at first but hearing the other sides like joe's and bart's was MIND BLOWING. love these types of convos. In the end I think it is management's fault for not helping the waitress just swap tables with someone. she could take another busy tabl

I told my manager that the guy at the table I was serving was the guy who my ex cheated on me with. She laughed and still made me serve the table because it was a fight night and we were swamped. Sometimes you just gotta take one for the team.

First lmao
