About the green screen. Answer is simple, it's because of the grand scale of the concept. Impossible to build an actual post-apocalyptic city as a background or a set. Sure, could've done it with simpler smaller props without the buildings, but then it could've looked like a cheesy abandoned factory or something and not convey the actual message - WHOLE civilization will crumble if we dont fight for it, not just one place.
