Oddity Archive: Episode 285.3 – Ben’s Junk: Thanksgiving Traditions (and not-so-traditions)

Even though Thanksgiving isn't until next week, I do have the next "regular" OA episode on-target for next week. As such, today marks...probably the only Thanksgiving-centric Ben's Junk I'll ever do.

"Northwestern" was the one that never got made.

Yeah, I was going to say, if I remember correctly, “American Movie” ended with Mark being uncertain if he’ll be able to get more money to be able to finish his project (“Coven”), and the impression I got was thinking he may not have realized he bit off more than he could chew … and THAT is part of what annoyed me when I watched it … that was he realizing he bit off more than he could chew? As an artist, I’m not a fan of leaving projects unfinished, but sometimes an artist needs to cut their losses if they’re getting in way over their head with a project. Maybe not forever, but at least for the time being. Sorry if that is a controversial opinion as I know this movie is loved by so many. I just had a hard time with it.

The first time I saw it, it was sold to me as "look at these idiots!". Of course (as I mentioned in the video), it was more like having the mirror held up.

As a fan of Ed O’Neill, one of my favorite Thanksgiving movie staples is “Dutch”. It took me forever to find it on DVD, because the only ones I kept finding were INTL regions. I of course also like “Planes .. Trains …” and may be in the minority that I didn’t really care for “American Movie”. I went to art school and in that movie, Mark reminds me of the overly ambitious schoolmates I had who never finished anything. I wasn’t really impressed by it. Maybe i’ll give it another watch sometime and see if I wind up feeling differently about it.

During my childhood, my parents had a VHS tape of various holiday specials recorded off network TV, and among them was Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. The whole "Little Birdie" segment I really enjoyed as a young kid, and it's still my most favorite part of the special today. Other than that, Charlie Brown Thanksgiving is just alright. In regards to that special being a bit dated, I've seen the two Peanuts films from around the same era, Snoopy Come Home and A Boy Named Charlie Brown when they aired on MeTV. Those are even more dated looking, with a lot of interior designs, backgrounds, and songs showing late 60s and early 70s design trends. And no, my parent's old holiday VHS tapes had all the commercials cut out. I recall the recording of A Charlie Brown Christmas having a split second of a specific sponsor slide (York Peppermint Patty, Mounds, and Almond Joy), which I have since determined was from the 1986 airing. Those old tapes are long gone. :(

My family really messed up "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" for me and my wife. They rented it and told us that it was the funniest movie ever made, then proceeded it ruin it by spending the entire movie telling us "oh watch this, it's funny" and telling us what was going to happen. And the thing was it would have been funny if they would have shut their big bazoos about it and let us see the damn thing....
