Oddity Archive: Episode 284.3 – Archive Thrifting #32: Halloween Hootenanny (+ Halloween 2023 commentary)

In case you missed it on Facebook and Twitter yesterday, there (alas) will not be a Halloween Special this year--I simply don't have the time left between now and next week to bash anything out. But, I've still got our annual Halloween Thrifting expedition for you...which, admittedly, devolved into me hitting up the annual pop-up Halloween stores. Strangely enough, it's probably more fun that way.

I also cut a commentary track for last year's Halloween Special a few weeks ago. While recording this, I was musing about details being lost in the final, off-air recording. Since it was a quick, simple task, as a fail-safe if I couldn't make a regular Halloween Special this year, I went back and put together an "in-house feed" of last year's video. That will drop next week. Until then, here's the commentary... http://youtu.be/Lu0cOLOKpno

AND, join me this Saturday night (pre-show at 7:30, main show at 8:00 P.M. Central Time) for a special, Halloween edition of the Archiveland Public Domain Theatre livestream. For the occasion, I have a rare VHS copy of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" (1920, generally considered the first "true" horror film") which features a period accurate (for early VHS, that is) Moog synthesizer score. http://youtube.com/live/MIqu1khPUlM

It's okay if you don't have the time for a traditional Halloween episode this year. I can re-watch the previous Halloween specials back to back and still have a good time! The pen radio at 6:53 I once had. I found one at a Pow Wow on the Rosebud Reservation circa 2006. You can find lots of tents at Pow Wows selling cheap Chinese junk like that, even bootleg action figures! The FM radio in the pen worked fine enough, but it's fatal flaw is the earbuds. The on/off switch and volume are on the earbuds' cord. When those earbuds inevitably fail, the FM radio part of the pen is now useless since no other earbuds, besides these specific ones, will control it! If they still have this at that Savers next time I'm there, I'm getting that pen radio just for collectors purposes. I think once you have more time for Archive stuff again, you should do a summer roadtrip to all the different thrift shops across eastern SD, southwest MN and northwest IA. Perhaps you will find a odd thrift shop in some deeply rural town that holds a holy grail of some sort.

For some reason, the casino across the street from the Goodwill struck me as a weird combination. On another note, any time spent in a used record store is time well spent. Don't stress about the Halloween special- you're still giving us some treats.

I don't twit or bookface (I'm a luddite like that), just YT and here. Totally understand about no special. Looking forward to the 'in-house feed' next wek; going to watch the commentary now. And looking forward to APDT... I'm pretty sure I've seen The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari but it's been many years and I don't remember much about it, other than liking it. And it being a Saturday night is a bonus -- no worries about me getting called with work problems.

Don't worry about the Halloween special. I kind of figured you would not have time to do anything this year. This thrifting was one of the great ones. Some of the costumes were just weird. I am definitely looking forward to the commentary. Great as always Ben.
