Oddity Archive: Episode 284 - SIlent Movie Day 2024 (Surrealist Sinema) (+ livestream)

Just under the wire for Silent Movie Day 2024, here's this year's special. This time around, let's get surreal.

Also, in less than two hours (as of this going out), I'm doing a special pre-Silent Movie Day Archiveland Public Domain Theatre livestream--a selection of Buster Keaton shorts with a unique-to-VHS piano score. The stream can be accessed at http://youtube.com/live/QDvQw2JYTMg. Barring anything catastrophic, it will be backposted for those that can't/don't wish to make it.

Already have it. Used my copy for the Ballet Mecanique and Anemic Cinema footage.

That was fascinating! It's always interesting to see what people were coming up with back then. Also, I have a copy of that Unseen Cinema box set. I've never gotten through all the films, but there's some interesting stuff in there. I was most interested in the short films they have from the 19th. and early 20th. centuries. I've always thought you'd like it. I can actually get you a copy if you want, and have it sent to the Archive P.O. box. Just let me know.

Never seen anything like this. Very interesting.

I will look into these. If I like them I might try to get a physical copy, that way I always have a copy. You never know with streaming, especially YouTube, when something will vanish, never again to be seen.

@Mike Carpenter The most recent restoration of Ballet Mecanique is on YT. Un Chien Andalou and a fair chunk of the Charley Bowers stuff is on YT as well--I just largely relied on my own copies for the episode.

I also had to turn away from it. I'm glad I watched the episode this morning instead of last night, because that scene might have given me nightmares.

The Ballet Mecanique is definitely something I would love to see, one day. The Charles Bowers stuff I would not mind seeing. The Dali film less so. Yes I turned away at the eye scene. This was very eye opening, pun intended.

Nice work! Thank you for working so hard to get this episode made and released on time.
