Ok so I've been sitting on this edit for MONTHS. Literally MONTHS.
Jolene is one of my coworkers at the music licensing company that I work for and she was here last spring to attend to a conference here in LA. I actually got to tag along and it was super cool hearing / learning / sitting in on all those panels and hearing how some music is placed in some of our favorite TV shows and films and/or how some artists strike publishing deals with labels.
(big takeaway = work on your craft ... always sharpen it and make what's authentic to you AND be around other people / network / get your stuff out there ... no one will find you unless you make a way to be found)
Anyways, that's what we do for work! We rep a bunch of artists and pitch their music to TV, film, fashion, etc. I'm on the biz affairs side - so I take care of onboarding all the artists, make sure their paperwork and files are in order, handle a lot of the marketing and finance stuff.
Jolene is the big picture, outreach, music guru lady. She LISTENS to music professionally. Analyzing composition, lyrics, production ... all the things that our brain subconsciously takes in but she does it on a much higher level. And she's the one who helps pitch and place the bulk of our license spots.
It's the skill set of knowing and studying music so much that she read a brief, see what the need is, and then pull out the perfect song.
That perfect car chase scene?
The memorable but awkward first dance?
The theatrical build up to the big reveal?
The adorable, quirky meet cute?
People put songs in those spots. And that's our job. It's so cool. I don't even know how I got here.
