Animator Reel: MANNY PEREZ

This was meant to accompany the “Moonlighting Animation Artists in Comics” post about Manny Perez, one of Friz Freleng’s main animators at Warners and DePatie-Freleng for many years. As animator Greg Duffell noted, Perez used clear and direct posing  to get to the essence of the gag. He shared some similarities in timing to Gerry Chiniquy, whose characters tended to pop from pose to pose. Some differences in their traits are apparent in Perez’s work; besides the way his characters move their heads during dialogue scenes, they usually accentuate their dialogue by pointing with their index finger.

Much of his animation on this reel are from Warners cartoons, with some examples from DePatie-Freleng, Ralph Bakshi’s Heavy Traffic (1973) and a 1950s commercial he animated for Ray Patin’s studio.

Hope you like it! There will be more to come…

Keep your eyes peeled, because soon, there will be a Patrons-exclusive “restoration comparison” from a scene in Techno-Cracked (1933) with Flip the Frog! If you’d like to see it, you can become a patron on this page…
