It was a unique idea, but not executed well. If they flesh this idea and those characters out more in the sequels, then in hindsight, it could help Believer.

Usually when I see these kind of exorcism/paranormal stories, the victims have to deal with it themselves and everyone else is like "Nope!". Seeing a community actually come together - and a diverse community at that - was a nice touch. My guess is the upcoming trilogy will probably expand on this and celebrate diversity in religion.
