New Music – Somewhere Not Here

In this case, it was some Ben Prunty music from his Faster Than Light OST. I don’t remember which track it was specifically, but it was one of the “dark ambiences.”
I was curious how one might approach making this, so I tried it. Turns out, you take almost any ambient soundscape (street noise, ocean, restaurant chatter), transpose it down an octave, and add loads of reverb. The rest is play. Most of the process has been lost, but from what I can remember, I separated the high frequencies, added even MORE reverb, and twiddled a bunch of knobs!
A similar process was applied to the opening sounds. The big “bang” is from a kick drum + reverb. This creates a new world of high frequencies that I isolate and modulate.
Altogether, you get an other-wordly soundscape and sci-fi horror!
