- Work on doing just a few minutes of a video 1-2 days a week. There is no need to complete entire workouts. Remember all movement counts.
- Pick and choose the exercises you want to do, don’t like a particular mobility drill? Skip it. It’s ok, it’s part of doing your best, leaving the rest.
- Pick a goal that can be reached within the constraints of your lifestyle. Many times we want to go ahead and throw ourselves into a goal that ends up not fitting in our lifestyle and we become overwhelmed, discouraged, and quit. Choose mini goals instead to help keep you from getting discouraged. For example, instead of going for 10k steps a day, try adding an additional 1k steps a day for a week and continue adding every week until it becomes part of your lifestyle. Instead of trying to do multiple full workouts every week try to add just one.
- Utilize alarms, timers, and your calendar to help set time for your movement. It’s OK to constantly need to be reminded when to get up and move your body. It’s OK to only move your body a few minutes every few hours. But sometimes we need that extra reminder to do so. Use all the tools at your disposal to help you get there.
- Surround yourself with messaging that aligns with your goals. You can check out books from the library, read free online articles, follow movement creators on social media. Ask friends if they’re interested in moving with you.
- Remove shame from the equation. Prioritizing rest is not laziness. Becoming overwhelmed with adding new routines is nothing to be shameful about. Sometimes, especially those who are neurodivergent, Have a hard time with change. This is why setting mini goals, and making sure however you choose to become fitter or just move more frequently can fit within your current lifestyle is important. If it seems daunting, don’t do it. Little by little you will get there!
