The "what am I like!" overblown drama couple are two of my least favourite characters of the show. That being said, the fully drawn out gag is that, essentially. Two people that have an somewhat elevated sense of 'their' drama and those personality traits the make them interesting. At least these are more insular people. Part of the charm is that they are well suited to one another in their own little world so to speak. I think there are minor traces for the inspiration of Donna portrayal in this character. Before Donna Noble evolved and that defensive mask was dropped, and lifted again with her memories being removed. This was before TOWIE, which disproved the notion that hardly anyone cares about the manufactured lives of people in certain parts of the country. So I think Catherine preambled this phenomena, of these particular types of people, and appropriately parodies them. It is annoying and long winded, because it is supposed to be. The gag, and we can agree on if it's funny or not to us. Perhaps works better on this basis; for those that recognise what's being parodied. None of that analysis makes it funnier of course. π
