About your thoughts at the end - I didn't grow up in the North East but did grow up in a striking mining town (not old enough to remember it) but people from that time are a strange lot to describe - I guess their parents grew up during the war, they didn't have the best time as kids, had more as they became adults (but still not a great time in the North)...it actually resonates with me a lot being the third generation of this because my mother couldn't understand how I wouldn't want to get a job in the early 2000s when there was plenty of decent paying ones in a secure workers environment so any suggestion of wanting to go to uni was scoffed at. I kind of resent her for that in a way but, is what it is.
