WOOHOO First process upload!
So this is a relatively rough example of my process for the Meet the Artist drawing that I did for my Instagram account.
1. I began with a rough pencil sketch (working in a local donut shop called Mighty O) of myself in two separate outfits; a cute version of myself and a cozy version of myself.
When I got home I used Prismacolor makers to flat color the drawings in what I saw as the actual/realistic colors. Ugh, boring.
Next up was inking the details and outlines with a simple felt-tip pen. On both my faces I tried to be fairly honest with how I view myself, lopsided eyes and super patchy eyebrows. Finally with this layer I added colored pencil for pop and contrast, and also because I hated the colors I'd started out with.
2. I decided to completely re-work the colors in a new drawing. This time using a grey pen rather than a black for the linework. The blacks of my outfit were a layer of dark blue, yellow, and purple marker. For my hair I used a lavender marker layered with the same golden yellow as my beanie. Much better. Funkier.
Black out the background purely because I've found myself wanting to use more black lately. I've as of late wanted to combine some of my aesthetic interest: cute/pastel/pink, colorful/funky/modern, earthy/dark/textural.
3. Computer edits! Scanned and uploaded the second drawing and tossed that bad boy in Photoshop. Upped contrast, adjusted colors, erased flowers (too distracting to main concept.) I added a light skin tone to the characters. I changed most of the pinks to reds. After I made this I looked around and noticed a similar color scheme in my outfits and home decor. Huh, follow your interests I guess.
In the end it still feels pretty messy to me, but I liked the end result much more than the beginning drawings. It feels bold and colorful and energetic and honest. It feels like me.
I hope you liked my first process outline! What do you think? Is this interesting to you? Would you like more of this? Let me know!
