You know, in a vacuum? That episode is fine. Good, even! It had some good laughs, it didn’t drag on the wolf-crying bit, and it had a fun little fight at the end. The problem, though...
Let’s talk a little about villain decay.
Aquamarine is far and away my favorite villain in Steven Universe. It’s not even close. She made such a huge impression in her first outing! She was menacing, hilarious, delightfully hateable with a delightful contrast between her design and her personality. I love that awful little Gem, but it is perhaps a problem that she was so overpoweringly unstoppable in her first appearance, because this followup? It’s just disappointing. True, every word out of her mouth was still a delight, but to be involved in such a...a petty scheme, something so petty and ridiculous, feels like a huge step down from what I wanted from her. I’d almost rather she not show up again at all.
Perhaps it’s unfair, but Bluebird come in at my new #5 for Season Six (below Guidance) and my new #110 overall (between Dewey Wins and Lion 2: the Movie). It was just so disappointing. I didn’t like it from a somewhat outside-the-episode perspective. I want more from Aquamarine, and I didn’t get it.
