Hoo, boy. That one’s rough to evaluate.
On the one hand, I found the episode very frustrating. I thought the “ordinary people are needed too” side of the plot to be just…dumb in its execution, in a way that undermined the moral. Seriously. Cupcake frosting and fizzy drinks. At least have them focus on the rolling pins and baking trays and stuff as weapons. Blegh. I also found the constantly fluctuating robot count incredibly distracting–at one point, they were being chased by almost a dozen, ran into more, and then found victory after defeating, like, five? I’m sure part of it was the fault of the liveblogging format, but. Blegh.
On the other hand, Entrapta.
I have a new favorite character! Every moment Entrapta spent speaking was an absolute delight. She was fun, funny, had a great design, was clearly well-thought-through with how her hair would be part of her body language. I love her, and I’m going to be counting the episodes until she comes back. I also definitely read her as autistic; her mannerisms and the way she focuses on and gets distracted by certain things read to me as autistic traits, not to mention her food quirks. I guess we’ll see how she acts whenever she comes back.
This is a hard episode to rate; for a while, it was in the running for #1, but it kind of fell off in the final third, so I think I’m going to rate it my new #3 for the series, between The Sea Gate and The Sword, Part 2. It should tell you how much I enjoyed Entrapta that she buoyed the episode above my distaste for the B-side.
Up next is going to be Infinity Train episode 3! I’ll see you guys for that on Friday!
