Wander Episode 9, and its fate as a liveblog
Added 2019-07-04 02:25:16 +0000 UTCFirst off, click here for the liveblog of the Wander Over Yonder episode.
Next up, I need to ask you all--as I'm piecing myself back together and rebuilding my life now that I'm properly medicated, I'm looking at the way I do things and the shows I'm doing. Wander Over Yonder is near the top of that list of questions.
When this show is good? I love it. It’s so funny, and I honestly look forward to more–but the show’s so concerned with delivering a Saturday Morning Cartoon Parable half the time that Wander Over Yonder doesn’t get to be Wander Over Yonder. When the show gets to be itself, it’s frenetic and hilarious. When it’s trying to impart A Lesson, it’s a painful slog.
Obviously, I’m not having a good time, but that’s not always a disqualification–I hated the crap out of a bunch of Steven Universe episodes that I managed to put out funny liveblogs for. The problem is that I just don’t feel like there’s anything for me to do here; the show focuses so much on the repeated gags that I’ve got little room to mess around with skits or commentary, and my frustration is making it less fun for you guys to watch me liveblog it.
I’ve had a few suggestions on how to handle the show. One of them is to do what Minda calls “bingeblogging”–watch an episode and only commentate every so often instead of constantly. That might work; I wasn't originally comfortable doing that with my current Patreon setup, but it was pointed out to me that Minda does multiple episodes in a row of whatever he's bingeing, so there's that possible angle.
It’s been suggested that I liveblog episodes people think I’ll like and skip the rest, but that may be hit or miss; nowhere is it better illustrated that people are slightly out of tune with my preferences than by the number of people who thought I’d be angry about the reveal in A Single Pale Rose, which I loved to pieces.
It’s been suggested that I simply drop the show. I don’t like that option much, since it was the first show you all voted for, but if I’m not enjoying it, I’m not enjoying it–and, worse, not making my dislike of it funny.
So! I want to know what you guys think. If you think I should keep going as I'm going and there's more good than bad ahead, I'll make no changes, but I want to know what you guys think I should do. If you collectively decide you want me to drop it, you'll pick a show to replace it, don't worry.

I remember watching season 2 first because it was so much better, the callbacks to season 1 is what forced my hand to watch it.

Especially when going about it the way you are right now, getting feedback from the patrons first. Enjoyment is crucial to liveblogging, I think, even if it's sometimes the riffing you enjoy rather than the show (as in the cases of those SU episodes you mentioned), but if neither is working out, I say drop it.
