A New Space for HFY & Sci-Fi Writers Using Modern Tools

Hi all,

I know you're here for The Black Ship, but I wanted to quickly let you know that I’ve launched a new subreddit: r/OpenHFY. It's a space for human-centric sci-fi storytelling that welcomes modern tools like AI-assisted writing. I’d really appreciate your support as I try this out.

I recently found out that even stories edited or brainstormed with AI tools aren’t allowed on the main r/HFY subreddit. That includes anything touched by AI at any point in the creative process, no matter how much human effort went into the final result. It's a strict stance, and I think a lot of writers could unknowingly fall foul of it in the future.

For me, using AI to refine ideas, clean up structure, and edit drafts has been a huge help. It’s what made it possible for me to even write anything in the first place. Especially when I first started sharing stories on TikTok back in 2023. I’m not trying to be the next Ekhinda (The Black Ship is a human masterpiece!), but I’m proud of the stories I’ve been able to share, and I know many of you have enjoyed them.

The goal of r/OpenHFY isn’t to compete with anyone. It's just a small, trial space to see if there are others like me who want to share stories that don’t quite fit in more traditional spaces. If that sounds like you, why not share one of your own stories?
